Can't believe it took me a year to read this when I'm the one who requested it! :) Well, it was worth the wait. I loved the inside scoop on what Delhi meant to YOU. You are absolutely right that travel guides can be purchased from many sources. Personal perspectives are harder to obtain for the ...foreigner. I appreciate your time and thought! Karan, another great review. Loved the concise summary/commentary. After your hearty recommendation, how can I resist getting a copy of this book? :) Best, Monica

Hi, Karan. I loved this collection of short stories, but I'm the first to admit I haven't read a lot of literature, my first love being popular fiction. :) This is a great review, thoughtful and well articulated. I enjoyed the alternate perspective. Hope your studies are going well. Bes...t, MonicaRead More

Suyog, this was GREAT! You had me in stitches! Good thing I wasn't drinking anything when I read this, or I would have sprayed the monitor! :) --M

I have been waiting and waiting to see this one (it's in my rental queue at my DVD place, but it's taking forever!). Loved the review, as always, and I suspect I'm going to love the movie. -M

Hi, Abhi. Much to ponder in this review. I wanted to share a few observations I've noted for some time... (My parents were Indian immigrants; I was born in the US.) 1) Unless an American's origin is 100% Native American, everyone can trace his/her roots to someplace else. Every American has ...immigrant(i.e. 'foreign') heritage. 2) EVERY immigrant group had issues similar to those you expressed. I respectfully disagree with you re: the late 1800s and early 1900s being golden years. From the beginning, there were 'new kids on the block,' and they ALWAYS felt as though they were on the outside looking in. Ask people of Irish, Polish, Italian, etc. heritage how well their ancestors were received, never mind the Chinese, all Hispanic cultures, etc. etc. I would respectfully submit for your consideration that with the advent of technology (the Internet) and the continual melting pot (USA = UN Stew), it is better now than it has EVER been. The average American is more culturally aware/receptive--of US regions/cultures other than their own town (!!), and the world at large. That said, I wholeheartedly believe Americans, and humans as a whole, have a sh*tlong way to go. 3) I've lived in so many areas of the US, I'm highly amused by accents...every TOWN has a different one! People in the NorthEast think people in the SouthEast have accents and vice-versa. Can you tell the difference between Charlotte, North Carolina and Clemson, South Carolina? I CAN!! :) Unless I'm in my hometown (outside Washington, DC), everyone thinks =I= have an accent! :) Since I haven't lived there in so long, I'm always amazed when I go back when I hear everyone. They sound like ME! To my ear, what I hear is the absence of any accent. My point: It's =human= to think YOU don't have an accent...everyone else does. :) You raised excellent points, and I just wanted to toss a few observations your way... worth what you paid for them. ;)Read More

Outstanding and disturbing and so very, very tragic. You said it perfectly (I'm paraphrasing) that two wrongs never make a right, and this was a horrific example of that. I won't read the book, but I'm glad (if sad) for the summary and commentary. We (humans) are supposed to learn from history an...d NOT repeat mistakes...I don't know we'll ever get it right, but reviews and thoughts like this work toward that goal. --MRead More

My parents have long told me Hindi is a beautiful language (in our home, Marathi was the second language, so no Hindi for me) and so much of the beauty cannot be translated to English. This is THE review that has made me MOST long to learn Hindi!!! You gave me a taste of that beauty that English c...annot adequately capture/translate. :) --MRead More

Love your writing style. Can I give you a list of films I would like to have analyzed? :) You are saving my brain cells (I don't have a lot to spare!). :) From your review, this film sounds like it has the story arc I wished Devdas had. Suffering for no purpose is not my idea of entertainment... (if I want to be depressed, I'll watch the news, thanks), but if it happens for a reason, and people learn and grow into better people because of the suffering, then that's my idea of a good story! :) Also, hey, Pradhan is my maiden name. I don't hear it a lot in my neck of the woods. :) Best, M Read More

Great review and analysis! I think most stories/films have a message, however subtle. Even 'popular' books/films. Nice job on nailing the messages in this one. I do love a good analysis. :) Best, M

You wrote this review with a lot of class, as opposed to crass, to which less talented writers default when dealing with the topic of sex. I haven't seen the play, but I was intrigued after watching Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) on a talk show, discussing her role in this play on Broadway in Ne...w York City. After your review, I know more about the content, and I will surely go see it. Now, do I go with my husband and our couples-friends? Or do I go with 'the girls'? Maybe both. :) Again, great job! I must admit I've been intimidated by the weight of this book...the Thud Factor. :) I just started Such a Long Journey--have you read that one?--and I've been eyeing Family Matters (sitting on my bookshelf beside SALJ), thinking perhaps I should at least TRY that one next. Your review helped lots!...! :) --MRead More
