For those who are less familiar with the entertainment scene, this book was recently made into a wonderful movie starring Hugh Grant and Rachel Weisz. I actually read the book after seeing the movie so I was able to enjoy both.
'About a boy' takes the reader through the relationship between Will and Marcus, who, for all practical purposes, are polar opposites of each other. Will is the epitome of the suave, 'cool', rich guy who basically lives off the royalties of a song his father wrote. His day consists of watching TV, buying clothes and ''having his hair carefully disheveled' as he puts it...
Marcus, on the other hand is an 11 yr old who represents the other side of the spectrum. He is a kid lost between his affection for his depressed mother and her 'yuppie' principles, and dealing with being 'cool' at school.
The book nicely describes how the relationship between these two men progresses with time, and how, in the end their personalities are somewhat swapped, with Will learning to be more emotional and sensitive, and Marcus switching over to become more stoic and 'cool' as is necessary with any school going teenager.
The book is an absolute laughing riot, and Nick Hornby has managed to write a hilarious book that covers some not-so- funny themes. It's a beautiful book that I'm sure everyone can enjoy. ps: the movie is also a must-see, especially for Hugh Grant fanatics, like myself. Enjoy!
