korn2k5 - There's no comparison with Sivaji, here... If Sivaji had loopholes, it was dressed up by magical music and bgm, Rajini's charisma, and Shankar's usual direction style. It started and ended as a masala movie. The tone of the movie was consistent throughout. Dasa had a classier plot... along the lines of Oscar winning 'Babel' and 'Crash' but decided to go with a mundane screenplay rather than a classy one. Where does slapstick comedy and hour long chase sequences belong in a movie whose primarly goal is to explain chaos theory? That's what is irking people! When a movie is released commercially, the Heavy concepts should be explained in a simple way. That's what makes it a great success! For limited experimental releases, the maker can afford to keep things subtle, etc... Read More

storyline good analysis, and i agree definitely about the chaos theory and the way the events are connected... BUT, having a great concept and executing a great concept are two different things entirely. BABA by Rajini(screenplay by Rajini) is one of the best treatises on Indian Philosophy... to touch the screen. Highest concepts of arcane vedanta are revealed there. But what about the screenplay? i think baba screenplay did better justice to the subject than this one. Anyone who reads a bit on Stephen King novels or browses the library can hit on some metaphysical concepts. But being half baked on those things is worse than playing with fire. It's not that people cant understand an intricate theme... the critics of the movie are just confused by the lack of classy narration.Read More

Korn2k5: True, there were more than a few elements subtlely left to the viewers, like the God element and how all the elements are linked together. But this kind of subtlety belongs in a serious movie and not a comedy/action fare! The mixup of tone for the sake of reaching out to the audience ...is not forgivable if Kamal says this movie is Oscar material, best of Tamil Cinema yet, etc. As a creator u gotta understand the significance of your work and create an appropriate budget for the movie... the thing with Sivaji was that, inspite of a mundane storyline, there were several catchy elements at regular intervals to keep the audience attention... Dasa: songs poor. Background music - average to the core. 100 crore budget? And then, the characterization of none of the Kamals is powerful. ...In Sivaji it was a man against system story that the audience can connect to at a deeper level. This is the crux of most of Shankar's movies and he exploited that well. In Dasa, the story tries to be classy but gets mass movie treatment by the script and the director. Well, you'll still enjoy it if you watch it for the performances of all the Kamals! good Timepass at least! -Shiv Read More

Dasavatharam – Kamal Hassan’s much hyped movie finally released after a string of delays. And I was more than excited to catch it on the FDFS (First Day First Show)! The story, without the usual man against corrupt government clichés is a welcome relief to the state of Tamil Cinema…With Kamal...Read more

r u serious in this review or satirical? I just finished the preview of this movie today... the screenplay is just one long chase, basically. Most of the characters out of the ten are unnecessary for the crux of the story. If you see the movie for the ten kamals and the visual effects, it ...is fine, but the script was made so mundane that there was no lasting effect of any of the kamals (Except the telugu kamal)... And there were too many logic loopholes too, to mention. Why cant he just grab the vial from the courier guy or from Asin instead of begging them to hand it over? (since he knew the seriousness of the vial) A movie of this scale requires some class! but am glad u got ur money;s worth! Read More

hey, nice coverage of chennai! The river cruise idea for cooum sounds great! (if they cleaned up the stink, that is!). There's more multiplexes of late, like INOX that are of real international standards of maintenance! Good news for movie buffs! -Shiv

Kreedom -(Tamil Movie released on week of July 20th 2007). The movie came in with high expectations of being a Family Entertainer with strong parental sentiments. u say this movie is a class apart? it is good entertainment, but elevating it to a super good status? it succeeded in getting audience attention only due to the cast and glamor factor and stylish presentation. there was no story, no screenplay and the stunts like the train stunts were so ludi...crous. the drainage stunt where he comes out of a drainage with coolers and roller blades! absolutely crappy and done just for presenting stylishly! if you see bond movies, they all defy logic but they have a nice story and content too, mixed with the glamor and action. i think dhoom2 works only because of the main leads and their starpower which has been used well! i can empathize with you on your disappointment with the movie... some of ur points, like the motivation and progression of events not being there, are well taken... my reactions weren't that extreme, since i was on the whole entertained by the movie... the bigger question is, would our comme...nts be the same if this were not a mani rathnam film? i think the south indian dubbings negate the effects of the movie totally. like watching it on a 10 inch screen with laptop sound system... on the whole, i agree it wasnt upto the mark, but the Hindi version was more enjoyable and true to its cause!

yeah, it seems as if the director was pandering to the tastes of the majority! like i had said, to taste universal success, he cant be too radical as he used to be!

The art direction is fantastic and the look & feel of Bombay during those days really comes alive through the grand sets! Mani Rathnam has learnt enough lessons from his earlier Tamil masterpiece Iruvar, not to include too much of character-study type elements in his screenplay. And that is boun...d to provide large dividends in the form of universal acceptance and the box office receipts! On the whole, Guru is definitely worth a watch or two! It may not be Vintage Mani Rathnam but is a sure entertainer worth the money! But do see the movie in a theatre with good sound effects, as Rahman’s score is really subtle and an average sound system can easily make it look like an average product! Read More
