One comment: the bullet doesnt cure cancer. the doc says that it has helped them remove the tumor which would have been difficult to remove through operation. the doc says that Avatar has to follow normal course of treatement like Chemo. I agree that this dialogue wasn't well versed in this scene an...d most people mistook that the bullet cured cancer. But that's not the caseRead More

Paul: To answer your question, this is what chaos theory is all about. The Butterfly effect as it's called means when a butterfly flaps its wings, a toranado may happen in Africa. You might wonder how the flapping of a wing can cause torando and this is where the random events that occur to link ...these 2 conditions are defined. In short, chaos theory says that in order to maintain the system in it's balance, a lot of random events which are interlinked with one another happen. In gist, 'Nature finds it own way' The protoganist of the movie clearly says that he wishes there is God and he says that for everything that happens in this world, there is a reason and that reason is NOT GOD. This is the agnositc view I am talking about. As for the time frame, he has a fiction story using certain facts that happened. He is linking the initial condition (12th century scenes) to Tsunami happening and says that nature has found a way to maintain the system balance. So, instead of unleashing the virus which went into the wrong hands, a tsunami strikes. For those believe in God, the perception will be like that of Asin's character. And for those who believe in power of unknown, the explanation provided by Kamal's character will sit well. check out the FAQs in my reviewRead More

Crawl, Walk and then run...In order for us to reach the standards of world cinema, this is what we need to do. Having said, for people who says the graphics in the movie look bad, please tell me one tamil movie which had graphics/special effects in other areas other than songs. Tell me one movi...e which has tried to bring a scientific concept into mainstream cinema. Let's learn to crawl first and then we can talk about running To Paul: Can you tell me what you do mean when you can say 'lack of depth and logic' in the movie? The movie hinges on Butterfly effect and randomness. So I am a little confused when you say that the story has no depth. I would be interested to know where you find it lacking :-)Read More

Very Nice review Kamdev and well written as well. You have nicely pointed out that in order to make a movie box-office success in India, one needs 'entertaining elements' which Kamal has comprised in his screenplay. For those who think that 10 characters are not necessary, there is another sub pl...ot to it which I read in sify. Each of the 10 characters represent the 10 avatars mentioned in Hindu Mythology. I came to know about this a few days back. One person has tied each and every avathar to kamal's characters in the movie. This movie has more depth than we can see and I think only one man can answer these open questions!!!Read More

In the end one thing is clear, at least, Kamal's movie has raised the IQ level of his viewers by making them think logically when watching a tamil movie and also raising an awareness to other departments of movie making.

Shivbits: What do you mean by 'commercial ' here? All films are released for commerical purposes only - to promote self, promote art and promote business If we don't introduce movie goers to subtlety when will they get used to it? We all got to used to 6 songs, 4 fights and the superhero image b...ecause some one introduced us to it and our brain got tuned to it. You need to have a change in order to have a revolution and a revolutionary change is what is required for Tamil Cinema. In all commerical films, including Mani Ratnam movies, there is a comedy track embedded within the movie. This is part of every movie. The same undertone is present in Dasavathaaram. The comedy didn't impede the movie's progress or the story When the concept is heavy, it's not necessary for the movie to have a serious tone. Best example is 'Life is Beautiful' - A story on a family struggling in Nazi concentration camp taken with comical undertone. I really wish people were this critical about all Tamil movies. This way, at least, the standard will improve. But alas, that's not the case. Read More

Good Review. Mr. Narayan, If you are talking about Malaika's pole dance as not family friendly, then any tamil movie when you have heriones and 'extras' in mini skirts using suggestive 'gestures' called dance movements as 'non-family' friendly. It's just perception. Having said that, I fe...lt Maliaka's dance was part of the script subtely showing what her profession is and what she is capable of doing. I can go and say her character itself wasn't required, but was added for glamour since it's required in the current tamil cinema( one of the compromises made in the movie). Talking of budget, it's easy to say from here that a movie cost 30 crores, 80 crores etc.. Tamil Cinema industry is 75 yrs old and we are just hitting the world market. So it will take a while for the industry to mature and for people to investment in moviesRead More

I think Kamal is trying to challenge the viewers to think outside the box (which is the usual script layout) and maybe that's why it's a little difficult to understand. I wish the DVD comes out with special features

Very nice review. There is one point in your review which no one said and I was thinking about the same. There is something in this movie for everyone. So based on their taste, they can just take what they want. This is a very good observation!!!! I differ from your review in one small aspect: ...I felt the the connection between Nambi and the final scene was provided sufficiently. You need to watch the final scene closely for the same. Again, this depends on how much attention you give to the screenplay rather than Kamal (which is difficult :-)) Also, the butterfly effect is about randomness and hence the 10 characters are random and Kamal has connected them the same way in the movie. Nice touch.Read More

On Asin: I read a lot of review stating she was irritating, but i think the idea was to make her like that. She is supposed to enact a naive agraharam girl who completely believes in God and is not worldy wise. If you observe those people, they talk like they shout and maybe that's what irritated ev...eryone. I felt she did her part well (not excellent like Urvasi in MMKK).Read More

First of all, please don't compare Sivaji with Dasavathaaram. Both are of different genres. Also, as I said in my review, Indian cinegoers, especially south India, are disciplined to watching 6 songs, 4 fights and retried storyline. You throw a different story and people are not going to understan...d. Sankar's Sivaji was the same story, the same track and the only difference was Rajni doing his old kind of style. Of course, it will appeal to the masses because there is nothing different in it. If I start going into Sivaji review, I can find flaw in crux of the film which is making black money white money. Having said that, the tone of Sivaji is that of every tamil movie 'Masala Mass Entertainment with latest technology gimmicks' which has been Sankar's signature. It's just the perception of people and it's difficult to change that with one film.Read More

It's a biased opinion of a viewer who marks a film as 'bad' just because he/she didn't understand the story

FAQs on Dasavatharam

To Shivbits Shiv, Even though I agree that Baba had a good theme, the movie was a colossal flop because of the way Rajni's superhero image got mixed with the actual story I agree Dasavathaaram has its own set of flaws, but I believe that the flaws are on the CGIs and some of the editing, b...ut not the screenplay or the plot. If you watch this movie like any other Tamil movie, what's the difference between this and the other movies. Kamal in one his interview said that he doesn't want to insult the intelligence of his viewers by having the movie makers form an opinion that viewers can only understand ''so'' much. I applaud his perspection because we should start thinking out of the box for us to come out of our stereotypes and appreciate such movies for it's subtlety and intelligence. Just because we don't understand doesn't make it a bad movie. Maybe I like this movie very much because I am used to the subtlety of such movies. I hate it when the makers assume that i can only understand ''so'' much.Read More

Hi, I liked your view on the tone of the movie, but I think if the movie hadn't introduced a comedy element to it, it would have flopped. Kamal took Alavandhan which had a wonderful concept. The tone of the movie was good, but it flopped. People still remember him for that flop. I can say the sa...me with hey Ram. When they watch the movie during it's release, people critize it. But when they watch the same movie 4 yrs down the line, they enjoy it. That's what Kamal movies are. I think Kamal compromised some of the screenplay elements like tone to reach the viewers. Also, why do you need subtlety in a movie if you want the movie makers to explain everything. Kamal has put some many subtelty in the movie where he has connected the dots. We need a discussion board to discuss such movies because it's ignorance of the viewers that causing the mixed reviews and not the movie by itself. When we talk about Hollywood style, it's not just the technical aspects, even the screenplay is written that way...Read More
