Good review, but I personally did not like the album, even after hearing it a few times. Haven't liked any of Yuvan's recent releases as well. He is definitely a 'popular' music director (like Harris), but, in my view, lacks in 'depth'. There are a few exceptions (like a KJY song in Raam). I don't k...now how to express this, but it is the kind of feeling you get when you hear to a 'Kaatril Varum Geethame' (IR) or 'Yedo Yedo' (ARR). Those songs affect you more deeply!!! Keep writing... Raj: Just well said. I tried several times to hear his songs. With my limited music knowledge, I find his music so 'repulsive'. It is depressing that he's been given an award. But, there is hope...because I heard the 'chand sifarish' by Jatin Lalit also topped the charts. As you said, we can't assu...me the public is behind his songs...at least not all of them huh? kkRead More

Hi Suresh: As usual great review. As you'd probably know, I am a fan of KR, and he is in my list of my fav composers in Tamil along with IR & ARR. I almost echo ur opinions. As I have said previously, sometimes, composing is a matter of passion or innate talent. No matter how many chart busters on ...composes, the innate 'knack' is something inexplicable. When I heard that theme music from KudaikkulM, it confirmed for me what I was believing all along. Thats why I have him in my list and not other prominent ones. But, I feel he is somewhat of a traditionalist and a very strict musicians. For example, you wont find many 'remix' type patterns or even club or house style rhythms. Also, look for the seeming simplicity of the song. The songs seem soo simple, quiet and does not explode. It is again, innate talent... Cheers, KKRead More

It is with loads of caution that I see a new bollywood (or kollywood) music album release on musicindia online. Album after album, song after song is coming out with questionable credentials. I wonder, why do composers churn out songs if it doesn’t hit you right in the heart? In my view, a...Read more

Nice selection, I agree with you re: the resham jaise song, it is one of the best, and I cant think of another singer who can sing it with the same feeling...he is my favorite from the day I started hearing hindi music (started with Kahi to milegi; milan) Cheers, KK

It was shocking to see some comments. It is also hard to believe that Himmesh is being mentioned with ARR? I myself has criticized ARR, but only knowing better about his genius in the early 90s. Every one of ARR's numbers are simply incomparable, orchestrawise, musical discipline wise, creativity-wi...se, and pure emotion-wise...so whether you like a tune or not, each of arr's nmbers is like a library, a treasure of different genres of music, different raagas etc. The world is discovering him...hope we wont let him down... Nice review. I am not a huge fan of Shaan myself, but, I did like his 'Tanha Dil', which is probably the Indian version of 'Shez all I have' the famed ballad by Ricky Martin (copying not implied). You should probably hear that song too (if you aven't already). Both songs have a very philosophical to...uch with long extended notes...will sound especially good when u play it in a car during long road trips!!! Keep writing, KKRead More

This is the 4th review I am reading today...and I am really impressed with your likings. I am also a huge fan of Abhijeet's voice, bec as a malayalee, we are used to hearing 'plain' clean voices (K.J. Yesudas & P. Jayachandran) as opposed to accented voices (Sonu Nigam, Udit etc.). Not to say that t...hey are not 'good' singers, but just that the accented voice makes me, a bit uncomfortable. Hence, I like Abhijeet's voice very much. You should hear to his best song, the title song from 'Milan' Kahin to Milegi. In my view, it is his best song. Cheers, KKRead More

Great work here as well, and well said. The quality of music is deteriorating, there are only very few MDs now, who compose music deeply, based on purity and authenticity. Good job... Keep writing, Cheers, KK

Himanshu: Good work again (Just read your review on copying). I liked all your choices, but with Anand Milind, I would say several of their songs are direct lifts from Ilayaraaja numbers from the 80s and 90s. However, that said, they did have good talent. I really liked 'Kahi to Milegi' from the ne...w 'Milan'. Their music is characterized by simplicity and tend to use soft, smooth note structures. In other words, their music doesnt overwhelm you, but at the same time makes u feel the emotions. About R. Jain, couldn't agree with you more about his talent. I sometimes wonderwhy he is not as well known in Bollywood as some others. Good work..keep it up, Cheers, KKRead More

Hi Himanshu: Good work, please keep it up. I am also heavily critical and intolerant of straight lifts. It is like cheating the audience. Here are some recent examples: Sholon Se: Listen carefully the starting sustain e-guitar-straight from Santana's Grammy winning number in 1999? Also, Black Fri...day-Album has the number 'Ruk Ja Bandeh' straight lift from 'Desert Rose'-Sting. It has been carefully modified to give it a different look. Keep writing such eye opening reviews.... Cheers, KKRead More

Good analysis of the title song. The instrument used in the RDB song (the 'ding' sound) is a traditional one stringed Tumbi and the drums is of course 'Punjabi Dhol'. ARR has also used the traditional middle-eastern 'Darbuka' in Khalbali... Cheers, KK
