First of all, I take this opportunity to wish all you readers a very Happy New Year 2006.

A new year, a new review. This is my first review of this year and hope you all like it.

I dedicate this review of mine to all the unsung heroes who gave us immortal music which is still in our hearts. Indian Film Music is the most popular form of music in India. Due to its immense popularity, it is bound to have a huge fan following. It is not always possible for the fans to know about every music director, lyricists and singers and this is very genuine. Thus I have decided to place the story of five such stars, who always remained on the back seat as far as the popularity was concerned. Their music proved that they were meant to be celebrities and deserved a better reputation than they had.

So here is my list:

1. Chitragupta

Arguably the most qualified music director(academically)  Indian Film Industry has ever produced. Chitragupta Shrivastava had a double M.A. in Economics and Journalism and he was a lecturer in Patna Degree College before he moved into bollywood. He started his career as an assistant to Shri S. N. Bihari, the famous music director of 1940s. S. D. Burman introduced him to AVM Studios as a solo composer and his first film with hem was Shiv Bhakt. Chitragupta composed the song “Chal Ud Ja Re Panchhi” for AVM and this song was ranked 8th in the “50 best songs of the millennium” list launched by Music Mania in 2000. Chitragupta composed songs for nearly all the singers. He used everyone from Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Talat Mehmood, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle to new age singers like Manhar Udhaas, amit Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal. His last solo venture was Ghar Dwaar.

Famous Movies: Bhabhi, Oonche Log, Ek Raaz, Barkha, Vaasna, Kali Topi Lal Roomal, Zabak, Aakaashdeep.

Famous Songs: Mujhe Dard-e-dil ka Pata Na Tha, Chal Udd Ja Re Panchhi, Chhedo Na Meri Zulfen, Dekho Mausam Kya Bahaar Hai, Lagi Chhute Na Ab To Sanam, Teri Duniya Se Door Chale hoke Majboor.

2. Khaiyyam

Mohd. Zahur aka Khaiyyam was never interested in music and was always fascinated by the Indian Film Music. He learned music under the famous music duo Husnlal – Bhagatram. He came to bollywood in 1946 to become an actor. He acted in Yeh Hai Zindagi. He also sang a duet in Romeo and Juliet. His first venure as a music director was Footpath featuring the famous song Shaame Gham Ki Kasam by the immortal Talat Mehmood. His first innings did not last long and after the massive hit Shola Aur Shabnam in 1960, he lost his musical touch. He took a long time to recover and was back in 1975 with Kabhi Kabhi. The songs were hit and Khaiyyam started his very successful second innings. He composed highly acclaimed songs for Noorie, Umrao Jaan, Trishool, Bazaar, Thodi Si Bewafaai, Jawaani Zindabad. For the unmatchable score of Umrao Jaan he got the prestigious National Award.

Famous Movies: Umrao Jaan, Shola Aur Shabnam, Footpath, Razia Sultan, Bazaar, Kabhi Kabhi.

Famous Songs: Kabhi Kabhi Mere Dil Mein, Aaja Re Aaja Re O Mere Dilbar, Jaane Kya Dhoondhti Rehti Hain Ye Aankhen, In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke, Ae Dil-e-nadaan

3. Ravindra Jain

As they say, if you do not have one sense out of the five, your remaining four will be stronger.

This is indeed true for Ravindra Jain. He was born in the house of a noted'Vaidya' Pt. Indramani Jain in Aligarh U.P. Due to his inability to see things, he was confined to his room playing Harmonium, singing songs and writing poetry. He achieved a degree in Music from Prayaag Sangeet Samiti Allahabad. Those days, this university was said to be the toughest as far as Hindustani Classical music is concerned.

Famous Movies: Nadiya Ke Paar, ChitChor, Chor Machaaye Shor, Ram Teri ganga Maili, Henna.

Famous Songs: Main Hoon Khushrang Henna, Kaun Disaa Mein Leke, Gori Tera gan Bada Pyaara, Ghunghroo Ki Tarah.

4. Jaidev

Jaidev always wanted to become an actor. He also acted in 8-10 hindi movies during 1932-1933. Jaidev always knew his responsibilities. He left a budding career in bollywood and returned back home due to his father’s blindness. When his father died, he waited till his sister’s marriage and then returned back to bollywood in 1951. His talent was immediately observed by Chetan Anand and he took him for Navketan Film’s Joru Ka Bhai. He also composed music for Chetan’s film Anjali. Later this combination od Navketan and Jaidev gave us all Hum Dono. The music of Hum Dono has been listened by connoisseurs with due respect even today.  It featured great songs like Main Zindagi Ka Saath, Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar, Allah Tero Naam. He was a talented music composer and always wanted to experiment. His music was fresh but he never tasted commercial success. After receiving Sur Sangeet Samsad Award for his movie Ankahee, he left us all in this world and departed fr heaven.

Famous Movies: Hum Dono, Reshma Aur Shera, Gaman, Gharonda, Ankahee

Famous Songs: Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar, Allah Tero Naam, Ek Akela Is Shehar Mein, Seene Mein Jalan,

Madhushaala by Manna Dey(Visit: https://mouthshut.com/review/Madhushala_-_Manna_Dey-88942-1.html)

5. Anand Milind

As per me, Anand-Milind have given music of all genres. They started their career a long back in early 1980s by composing songs for Parvati Khan and Sharon Prabhakar.

Sons of the legendary Chitragupta, Anand Milind struggled hard from 1982 to 1988 to get their first major break, that was Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. They were the most sought after music directors during the early 90s.

For more details about them, please check my review on them at:

Famous Movies: Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Dil, Beta, Raja Babu, Rakshak, Anari

Famous Songs: Papa Kehte Hain, Khambe Jaisi Khadi, Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate, Sundara Sundara, Kya Mausam Aaya Hai

So that was my tribute to the unsung heroes. I request you all to please add a few names if I have missed anyone. Waiting for your ratings and comments.

Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.

Cheers,

Himanshu(madsadman)
