Abhijeet was born as Abhijeet Bhattacharya, in a Bengali family from Kanpur. He wanted to be a Chartered Accountant and came to Mumbai to prepare for it. The fortunes turned and he became a singer. He got calls for singing Chorus from Rajesh Roshan and Jagjit Singh. Very few people know that Lifebuoy Jingle'Tandurusti ki raksha karta hai Lifebuoy' was composed and performed by Jagjit singh.
In the beginning of 90s he got the break from Anand-Milind for the movie Baaghi and then he never looked back. I should clarify that best songs doesnot mean only soft songs, they can be even remix numbers if sung properly. Thus my list contains all kinda songs of Abhijeet.
Here is my list -
1. Chaandi Raat Hai - Baaghi
Music - Anand-Milind
In real manner, the first hit song of Abhijeet alongwith Har kasam se badi from the same movie. This song has a lot of ups and downs and Abhijeet has beaten them all. With Kavita Krishnamurthy accompanying Abhijeet, this song is a treat for your ears. Definitely my favourite
2. Waada Raha Sanam - Khiladi
Music - Jatin-Lalit
I request you all to please comment for me if I have chosen this song wrongly and it should not be there in the list. The song which established Abhijeet's voice as a soft, honey dew kinda voice, has to be in the list. Listen to this portion of the song and you will be a fan of Abhijeet forever:
Kaisi udaasi tere chehre pe chhaayi
Kya baat hai jo teri aankh bhar aayi
Dekho to kya nazaare hain
Tumhaari tarah pyaare hain
Hanso na mere liye tum
Sabhi to yeh tumhaare hai o jaane jaan
Hamaari chaahaton ka mit na sakega fasaana
3. Shehar ki Ladki - Rakshak
Music - Anand-Milind
I purchased the audio cassette of Rakshak way before its promos were in the air. My shopkeeper informed me that he had ordered only 5 cassettes of Rakshak and I was the first one to purchase after 5 days. When I came home and played the cassette - Whoooom. The very first song was the same song featured in my list. Though Abhijeet's part is a bit less in this song but whatever he has sung, he has performed it beautifully. The song is full of energy, thanks to Abhijeet's voice for making it a smash hit. This song features in my list because of the speed which it has and all is because of Abhijeet's voice. Style pe uski, smile pe uski hi tabiyat bhadki Shehar ki ladki.
4. Jhanjhariya - Krishna
Music - Anu Malik
Though I like the original version of this song(I would like to clarify that this is originally Anand Raj Anand's song from his Album Babu Tip Top and was sung by himself), I like Abhijeet's version more. Abhijeet has done a complete justice with the ups and downs of the song. His voice is at its best when he sings - Ek pal to Aisa laga jaise meri dhadkan ruk gayi Jhanjhariya.
5. Chaand Taare - Yes Boss
Music - Jatin Lalit
I donot know whom should I give the credit - Jatin-Lalit or Abhijeet. This song has the class of its own. With a soft electric piano in the background, trumpets and sopranos in the interlude this song has a richness. It is to be noted that I have mentioned the use of instruments in only those parts of the song where Abhijeet is not singing. The places where he has his voice are barren with background instruments, still just because of his soft and mellow voice, the song maintains the richness. Definitely, the credit goes to Abhijeet.
Some more songs I would like to mention are - Badi Mushkil hai, Ole Ole, Aur Kya, Mere khayaalon ki mallika, Aanewali hai milan ki ghadi, Ek kunwara phir gaya maara. I have tried to make this list as versatile as possible and thus these songs were not included. I like these songs and Abhijeet will remain one of my favourite singers forever.
To finish off this review I would like to write only a few lines:
Yaar Tu Bhi Sun Zara Aarzoo Meri Hai Kya
Main Kya Ban Jaana Chaahta Hoon
Main Kahan Kharaab Hoon Main To Lajawaab Hoon
Main Ye Manvana Chaahta Hoon
Maan Ja Ay Khuda
Itni Si Hai Dua
Main Ban Jaoon Sabse Bada
Main Ban Jaoon Sabse Bada
Mere Peechhe Mere Aage
Haath Jode Duniya Bhaage
Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai
Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai
