The Dev Anand starrer film, ‘C.I.D.’, produced by Guru Dutt and directed by Raj Khosla was released in 1956. The film’s story was written by Inder Raj Anand and memorable music was by O.P.Nayyar. The film lyrics were by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Jan Nisar Akhtar. When such a talented and dedicated cast and crew worked to make a film, it had to be a Superhit. So was the success of C.I.D. The other star cast included Shakila, Johnny Walker, K.N. Singh and Waheeda Rehman. It was Waheeda Rehman’s debut film. The


The film story by its name is a crime thriller. Shekhar is a crime investigating officer who tries to find the killer of his friend, Shrivastav, a newspaper editor. Shrivastav was about the expose the underworld gang of the rich and famous but unfortunately he is killed. While investigating the case, Shekhar comes across and lady, Rekha (Shakila – trying to borrow her car to chase a criminal but fail), Master (Johnny Walker – the sole witness of the murder). Master informs Shekhar that the murderer is Mehmood, who is serving a jail term. Rekha is the daughter of the Chief of Police (K.N. Singh) so trust is formed between her and Shekhar. Shekhar is bribed by Kamini (Waheeda Rehman) to release the killer from jail but she fails. She works for Dharamdas (Bir Sakhuja), the mastermind of the crime and the underworld boss. He tries to win Shekhar on his side by making Kamini seduce him but fails. So he kills Shrivastav’s real killer and calls Shekhar to the crime scene, putting the blame on him. Shekhar is sent to jail. He and Rekha start loving each another.


Master persuades Shekhar to run from jail and prove his innocence by finding the real culprits. Shekhar runs away. Dharamdas sends people to kill Shekhar but they cannot. Instead Shekhar confronts Kamini who realizes her sins and agrees to help him now. Shekhar and Kamini are on a run when Shekhar finally decides to surrender to the police. Shekhar tells the truth to the Chief who is not convinced as there is no proof. They are about to reach the station when Kamini is shot. Kamini is fighting for her life on hospital when Dharamdas sends people to kill her. Kamini can prove Shekhar’s innocence of she survives. When Kamini is about to be killed Shekhar and the Chief reach in time to save her.


Shekhar’s is proved innocent and Dharamdas is convicted for murders. He is put in jail to serve a term for his sins. Rekha and Shekhar get one in marriage.


The film was a hit and so were it songs and music. The main singers were Shamshad Begum, Geeta Dutt, and Mohd. Rafi. Some of the popular numbers are ‘Boojh Mera Kya Naam re’, ‘Leke Pehla Pehla Pyaar’, ‘Kahin Pe Nigaahe kahi pe Nishaana’ and so on. These songs are a treat to watch and hear even today along with the film.
