The Hindi Film, ‘Friendship’, released in 2007 is the remake of a Tamil blockbuster, ‘Snegithiye’ meaning ‘Oh! Friend(Female)’, which was released in 2000. The film has been produced by Mukesh R. Mehta ad has been directed by Priyadarshan. The film is a thriller by genre. The main star cast is of Tabu, Jyothika, Sharbani Mukherjee and Ishita Arun, daughter of Ila Arun. It is primarily a female oriented film which highlights the strength of true friendship.
The film plot revolves around Radhika(Sharbani Mukherjee), a rich girl who has two ready-to-die types of friends, Vani(Jyothika) and Geetha in a girl’s college. The trio is famous for throwing pranks on everyone. Lakshmi, Radhika’s aunt wants her to get married so she starts looking for boys for her. Radhika is not interested in marriage so Vani plays a prank on her aunt. Vani makes up a story that Radhika loves a boy named Ramesh(Major Ravi). Lakshmi holds her search for boys for Vani. Strangely, Radhika receives calls and letters from Ramesh which shocks both of them.
One evening when the college function is on, Ramesh is found dead on the performance stage. Vani and Radhika are the prime suspects as Radhika knew Ramesh. Geetha disappears after the murder from the college hostel. The case is investigated by Inspector Gayathri(Tabu). When all evidences point to Vani and Radhika, the two are arrested because a gun was found in Vani’s hostel room(when they were trying to find out that the anonymous Ramesh). Vani and Radhika run away from police custody but keep Gayathri informed of their whereabouts. They are protected by an advocate, unknowingly. Lakshmi and Geetha clear their intentions towards Radhika and hence the real killer is still not found.
When Vani informs Gayahtri that Geetha has been arrested, she comes with a gun at the location. Gayatri tries to shoot the three girls. Gayatri is arrested and the advocate informs that Jomal(Savithri) her younger sister was the cause of Ramesh’s murder. Ramesh was a flirt who had affairs with many girls. One was Jomal who dies after being betrayed by Ramesh. Lakshmi had chosen Ramesh for Radhika who came to meet her at the college function. When Gayathri saw him there she shot him as she was seeking revenge for Jomal. Gayathri was a person who hated humans and was only attached to Jomal.
Gayathri ends up in an asylum. Vani, Radhika and Geetha are set free and lead a happy life united as friends.
The Hindi film was not as big a hit as was the Tamil version. But the thriller is surely a once watch.
