You know Sai, I've been giving the different interpretations of Tere Bina zindagi se koi some thought - and I think we're both right and we're both wrong. In the movie...I think both interpretations of work equally well. On the one hand, he's the one thing that's holding her back from her dream...s and aspirations. So he becomes the one 'shikwa' in her life. On the other, she *has* left him behind and built her own life - and it's a good life; it's what she wants - 'Tere bina zindagi se koi shikwa to nahin' - and yet without him it's incomplete - 'Tere bina zindagi bhi lekin, zindagi toh nahin'. Both interpretations work I think and that's where the beauty of it lies. It's like that song - 'Main nehi makhan khayo'. Whichever way you look at it, it makes sense. But less gimmicky - just two different layers of meaning blending seamlessly into each other - Gulzar the genius. :) RupsRead More

You’re the One that I Want by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John I got chills, they're multiplyin', and I'm losin' control Cause the power you're supplyin', it's electrifyin' … I better shape up, cause you need a man I need a man, Who can keep me satisfied I better shap...e up, if I'm gonna prove You better prove, that my fate is justified Are you sure? Yes I'm sure down deep inside You're the one that I want (you are the one I want), ooh ooh ooh, honey ‘What’s happening…stud!’. Olivia Newton John became every red-blooded male’s fantasy with those words and even today the sight of her in those skin tight pants sends many pulses accelerating! This is one of my favourite songs in the movie because it’s such a happy song (and also I love the choreography). Things have worked out for the totally mismatched Danny and Sandy because they’ve both figured each other out…and they are both willing to do what it takes to keep the other one in their lives. If that means changing themselves – well they’ve thought about that and they are ‘sure down deep inside’ that they’ll do anything to hold on to the ‘one that they want’. I’ll be the first to accept that the movie simplifies every issue it tackles. But if you look hard enough, the songs are where the real story is and it’s the songs make the movie into the cult classic it is. Read More

Press against them when we dance, make them think they stand a chance and then refuse to see it through, that's the thing I'd never do. ... … I don't steal and I don't lie, but I can feel and I cry In fact I'll bet you never knew, but to cry in front of you, that's the worse thing I could do. If you’ve read my review of the movie, you know that this song made a big impression on me. I think Stockard Channing’s voice is amazing – powerful and strong and she does a fantastic job in this song – both the singing and the acting. In the Indian context, this song makes a lot of sense still – especially considering all the debates that have been raging on the open sexuality in remix videos these days. In our culture, most girls will still go only so far and no further – because we are ‘good Indian girls’. It’s the way we’ve been brought up; it’s an ethical framework we’ve been conditioned to accept. And yet sometimes one wonders about the logic…is being ‘good’, the worst thing we could do?
