Why this Kolaveri Di?

Reams and reams of print have already been put into writing about the new rage amongst Indian youngsters today, but I just couldn’t resist myself on penning my thoughts on “Why this Kolaveri Di”!

Not one to follow Tamil music, I first came upon this song on several social networking portals. I ignored it at first, but later curiosity got the better of me and I was keen to listen to the song that people, from across the world, were going gaga about. In fact, even national news channels were carrying features about it. The first time I heard it, it really didn’t strike a chord. I couldn’t fathom what was so great about this song. In fact, it hardly even qualified as a song!

But today, I have to confess that I was wrong! The song is amazingly catchy and one can’t resist listening to it, just one more time! I’m not even a big fan Dhanush fan, but look at him-he looks like he could be the guy next door. He doesn’t have the aura of a big star, and that’s his biggest USP. For me, the cheeky, mischievous smile on his face when he’s singing the song is the best part of Kolaveri Di! It looked like he was totally enjoying himself and one can’t blame him-the lyrics are downright goofy, that the sheer silliness of the song brings a smile on our faces!

Apart from that, the subject of the song, which is love failure, is also something that is identifiable with the youth. There are “soup boys” in every street corner of India, but the hilarious description of their state of affairs is quite creative! Moreover, Dhanush is not a professional singer per se, and so the commonness of his voice inspires all to sing along.

Like any other piece of creativity, this song too has its critics. Some like it, while some don’t. But look at the bigger picture. I don’t remember any other song in the recent past which has tickled the imagination of this vast country, in this manner. This song has managed to unite the entire country, breaking all language barriers and that’s quite a feat! So, with “hand le glass u, glass le scotch u”, let’s all put our hair down and wonder “Why this Kolaveri, Kolaveri Kolaveri Di”!
