Welcome to the India where trains will fly: Indian Railways to Implement Maglev Train Project

By: iam_zain | Posted Nov 29, 2016 | General | 9788 Views | (Updated Nov 29, 2016 06:00 PM)

I have always been fascinated with speed and reading about Indian railways implementing the maglev trains propelled me to write this post.

For those of who you who are unfamiliar with the concept of Maglev trains, let me tell you Maglev trains don't run on tracks. Yes, you heard it right, they don't run because they fly.

Maglev trains run at speeds ranging from 350kmph to 500kmph. The technology that fuels these trains is called magnetic levitation. It allows the train to run without touching the ground and remains elevated at 1 or 6 inches above the ground through a system of magnets and thereby eliminates friction.

And the good news is that Indian railways had instructed Rail India Technical and Economic Service(RITES) to prepare a minutely detailed report on it within a period of six months. Also, the first leg of the project is to be implemented within 3 years.

“We would be very closely associated with RITES as they would collect all the required data after which we would together do the analysis of the sufficiently high clientele sectors where Maglev can be implemented,” Nitin Chowdhary, executive director of mechanical engineering(development) in Ministry of Railways told live mint.

Chowdhary also added that the widespread notion about this project being expensive is false. He said that railways have been in talks with several experts in the industry and it seems to be economically viable
