~Music and Attitude~

Music is all about attitude.

There are many of us who listen to different kind of genres in music however we tend to dislike orjust would not prefer certain kind of genres. For example, I have met some of people who just think Rock = pure noise. Hmmph! Ok fine, rock is a hard melody and it is just not about music but attitude also.

Not penning this DP to defend Rock or metal but I was thinking about this people including myself being so touchy about genres of music we pick. As for me, I simply dislike Hip-Hop or Rap (Keeping respect to people who like it) It is just my personal way of thinking. I just do not believe talking is music and their lyrics …jeez, women…expensive cars, gold chains, getting high, parties etc…come on it does not appeal to me, no sir. For me your lyrics, should give your personal experiences of life (no matter how dark they are).

Music is just simple 7 notes (ok yeah…for all trinity graduates there are 14 notes!) so why on earth will I not like them if they just change in tone. As I took a deep breath, I understood that music is about attitude, it represents you. You would just try to listen to those artists who pen down lyrics which means to you or make such kind of music with those simple 7 notes that it appeals to your personality and character. When I was in teens I remember I use to head bang as if I never needed my skull tomorrow to legendary heavy metal bands but now it is not the same, I mean I respect them and listen them too but I have matured (yes, a bit!)…I am more towards profound and mature sounding jazz, blues, depth in character sounding artists like Eric Johnson, John petrucci, Mark Knopler, Buddy Guy, King, Clapton, Satriani, Vai many more… I was so astonished to know we have such an amazing voices and music instruments from India.I bow to artists like Sultan Ustad Khan, Pandit Hariprasad churasia, Ravi Shankar, Anouskha Shankar, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (man, that’s some voice!) et al..they are mesmerizing. The sound from Sarangi, Sitar, Zitar(!), Flute, Santoor…they sound so peaceful and pure. My thinking has changed and so I have been listening to artists who appeal to me, my attitude and the person I am. Their sound emotes something which is indulging for me.

I personally feel that next time you listen to any artist,I think we should see what these artists pen down, their thoughts, what is their sound. Personally I feel, We cannot like music in one listen…unless it is commercialized popular music (they are catchy and found way worthless). Every time I listen to Shakti Concert ( John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain—oow!) I find more and more depth in their music and I find this is something I missed long time ago.

As you know, Britney Spears (arggh!!!!!!!!!) won’t be remembered like even couple of years from now whereas Floyd would be still worshipped by our great grandchildren.

Happy listening! \m/
