you're right, it doesn't matter much to the average viewer, hindi or english. but im a bit of an idealist you see :). besides, even if i'd not known about this, i would have disliked the movie.

'These movies are losing the audience after each movie.' im not sure if they are, but populism is the worst measure of quality. 'First of all we are talking about reviewing a movie and not about film making so your above sentence does not make any sense to me.' well, nothing you have said... so far made any sense to me. but i offered my views instead of behaving like an uptight detention teacher. it is impossible to make two people agree on something if either of them likes winning arguments more than being logical. ’’When there are flaws in KJ movies then they are nit-pickings for him and the same flaws in other movies are major flaws for him’’ i haven't read khalid mohamed's reviews on karan johar's movies. i just know that he gave them 5 stars. what i think is this - you have limit...ed space to write a review. so if you think the movie is fantastic, you use more space writing about why its fantastic. if you think the movie is bad, you use more space about writing why its bad. you don't have to allot specific space to specific aspects of the film. for example, i liked lagaan, even though it had quite a few flaws. but 90 % of my review is about how good lagaan is. your format of dividing the reviewing space into water-tight categories like 'pros', 'cons', etc. does not appeal to me. it makes me feel like a mathematics examiner. as i've said before, filmmaking is an art. its poetry, not algebra. so you mark it like poetry. i don't remember coming across the water-tight category format in any established journal, right from sight and sound and NY Times to TOI. of course, you can stick to your scientific format and i'll stick to my arty one. guddu dhanoa might be the great cinematic master for the paanwallah around the corner like bergman is for cinema-lovers all over the world. its all a question of sensibilities and i have no problem with dhanoa being in the paanwallah's movie hall of fame. 'That is not a rumour it is truth.' in civil society the claims of a bunch of journalists are not termed as truth. 'BTW, the characters wanted to take KJ, etc as director for their movies. What’s wrong with that. Is it mentioned that they would have threatened KJ or others in making thier movie?' of course! do you think karan johar or even guddu dhanoa would cast the underworld don's mistress in their films because they are assured of her merits as an actress? i suggest you watch the movie again!Read More

’’Honestly, there’s just no sliver of hope, redemption or humanism in this rather depressing saga of crimelords versus crimelads...' there really isn't any humanism in the movie. what you talk about came so late in the movie that i didn't care what happens to maqbool or his bab...y. 'There are even vulgar jokes going around for Khalid and Karan about their relationship. I hope you know what I am talking about' khalid mohamed and karan johar are in love with each other? thats beautiful. really. the only thing i find vulgar about it is that its based on unfounded rumours and no evidence. it would do a lot of good to our society to have an ope nly gay celebrity couple. thanks for the mental stimulation. regards.. nice to hear from you again amjad. im not saying that because its a social convention but because it really is interesting answering your comments. 'Do you really think these movies deserved a five star rating?' in short, oh yes! i loved both of them. i've grown to like KKHH a little less now..., but i think both these movies are terriffic. i would give them something around 4 stars, because i'm a bit more stingy than khalid mohamed. similarly, i probably liked maqbool as much as him, but gave it half a star less. in my humble opinion, chandni bar and sarfarosh were watchable. the sad thing is, anyone makes a not-boring movie on an important issue and there comes the flood of bouquets from every corner! '..particularly by a critic who does not spare any flaws in the movies and both these movies had numerous flaws' yes there are many flaws. i think KKHH is logically incoherent, terribly commercial, cowardly and superficial. but what towers above it is its moving drama. KKKG is all that and also archaic in its outlook. but it delivers an even stronger emotional punch. my point is, a movie can have a hundred flaws but its worth is decided by considering it a piece of art and not a mathematics answer sheet. if it moves me, its great. of course, a lot of people here would disagree, but each one to his own. 'I have read his review on Maqbool and what flaws he talked about..' about those questions khalid mohamed asks in the maqbool review, i have the same questions as well. well almost the same. what right does vishal bhardwaj have to claim that karan johar or whoever is bullied by the mafia? has it been proved beyond rumours and controversy? and movie really was shot in Bhopal. where i differ from khalid mohamed is that i don't think these questions are as important as he makes them out to be.Read More

i liked this movie quite a lot. i liked the fact that it is one of the most sentimental movies i've seen. the sentimentality gets corny, repetitive, contrived, manipulating and melodramatic but it still touches you. thats karan johar's real achievement. he's taken the most abused genre and made one... of the best movies in that genre. too bad the people crying out about how its not 'different' didn't like it. i agree with most of what you wrote. something i would have mentioned is its portrayal of women. kareena kapoor's character shows an absolute lack of respect for women. if the traditional woman (jaya bachchan) shudders to think of correcting her husband, the modern women either hang around like in-house entertainers (kajol) or fashion slaves with no mind of their own (kareena kapoor). i think i should write a review on this one :)Read More

thanks everyone :) amjad, its nice to read your views. lets discuss them briefly. first, i don't know if my hunch about how people would react to the movie is any good. the only reviewer i respect is khalid mohamed and his views are pretty much the same as mine on this ( if you haven't read it,... check out his column on the mid-day website). second, when i wrote the word neurosis, i meant everything that you mention about guilt and conscience. third, i didn't see anything perceptively different on irfan khan's face in those scenes. thanks. mukul, its always good to read your words of appreciation. i don't know about coming back and going somewhere. i find review writing boring. unless the movie really inspires you to write well, most reviewers assume the directors job of narrating the story, and then using various synonymns of good, or various synonymns of bad (me too). inspiring a great write-up rarely happens with recent movies. for the past year i've been mostly watching old movies, foreign movies and regional movies. even if they do stir me up, i don't think there's a point in reviewing those on this website. i liked this movie. i read the stuff about muslims being sketched as the aggressors and all that in khalid mohamed's review. im not sure if the director really meant it that way.. in case you havent read his interview in the times of india of november 10, i'll quote him - '...i feel Manoj Bajpai...'s character Rashi will decide the fate of Muslim thinking in India...' '..but we must bild a Ram temple in Ayodhya. It would be a national monument to a national hero. If the Muslims expect us to accept Akbar as a national hero, why won't they accept Ram as a national hero?Ayodhya is not just another site, it's our psyche.' '..every year people will see TV footage of Babri masjid being destroyed on December 6. So, I would really like to make a film on the destruction of the Somnath temple.' 'We have to finish Ram's unfinished work. If we don't, who will fight his battles? If we retract now, we will lose a hitoric battle' 'If the Muslims accept our histoy, there will be no problems. Everything will be solved.' It was also interesting to read the letter to the editor on this by farid (from here). im not making any value judgements, but it is amply clear that Dwivedi tows the RSS line. i still like the film and i didnt find it offensive in any manner. reading this only made me consider the other viewpoint more seriously. but i still don't know enough to decide who i support. i hope this doesnt get hijacked into a debate on communalism, but for those interested we can do that elsewhere :)Read More

realizing your deep feeling of guilt we shall forgive you for committing the blasphemous sin of not reading the review earlier. on a serious note, thanks for bringing a smile to my face with your comment. :) the exile continues because there isnt much interesting stuff to write about... there... was the legend of bhagat singh which i thought was absolutely horrible in its values.... but i dont think many pple will care. and i was slightly busy with college admissions.... yes, being 17 years of age, ive just passed the 12th... that too barely... and im pursuing an honours course in journalism now. :) why is it tough to believe? do i sound like a brooding bald old old man ?Read More
