To : Indianwebmaster : Good Question : One thing i would like to know is why some nano give 10 kmpl mileage and some give 21 plus ? It is quite apparent that Tata Motors is remaining absolutely silent on this crucial issue because they are well aware that they have managed to sell off some... defective Nano cars to unsuspecting customers who are now forced to spend a much higher amount on petrol which is perhaps even more than the cost of running a mid size sedan. What is all the more shocking is that they have managed to gag the press on this critical issue.Read More

From the several posts that we see on portals like mouthshut etc. it is very obvious that there are Nano cars which give an excellent mileage of 21 Kms per litre in city traffic with the AC on and there are also Nano cars which give a pathetic mileage of 10.5 Kms per litre in city traffic with the A...C on i.e. exactly half the mileage. Tata Motors needs to take a clear stand that either the mileage of 21 Kms per litre is an aberration or the mileage of 10.5 Kms per litre is an aberration. Remaining silent in this absurd manner without taking any stand whatsoever is tantamount to : 1) Accepting the fact that there are some defective Tata Nano cars on the road that are returning an abysmally low mileage of 10.5 Kms per litre or even lesser (as confirmed in writing by some of the aggrieved Nano owners) 2) Confirming that Tata Motors will not initiate any action to rectify these defective cars. Excellent review. I am rather intrigued to note that your Nano is giving you 20 Km per litre wheras my Nano LX is giving me only 10.5 Kms per litre wih A/C in peak time city traffic at Chennai. Tata Motors personnel have tested driven my car along with a Plant Testing Team and have orally confi...rmed that it is returning only 10.5 Kms per litre with A/C in peak time city traffic and they have even gone to the extent of writing to me stating that this mileage of 10.5 Kms in peak time city traffic with the AC on is ''very appreciable mileage''. The following extract from the review of a Mumbai based Tata Nano owner dated 1st October 2010 on the mouthshut portal is self explanatory. “Tata Nano Mileage is abysmally poor : best that I could get was 10.8 km / litre and worst was 9.9 km / litre. When I mentioned these figures at the time of servicing, the workshop refused to believe, but when I asked some other owners, they reported similar poor figures. For such a small car + small capacity engine, these are horrible figures. Just to give a comparison, my 5 year old Tata Indigo is presently giving 14.5 km/ litre over the same route / with me driving :)” I think it is high time that Tata Motors came out with a clear statement as to why some Nano cars are giving 20 + Kms per litre in peak time city traffic with the AC on while a few other Nano cars are returning just 10 + Kms per litre in peak time city traffic with the AC on. The ARAI cerified mileage announced by Tata Motors is 23.6 Kms per litre. The earlier this ''mystery of the missing mileage'' is solved the better it would be for all Nano owners.Read More

I am completely at a loss to figure out the logic behind the vision with which the Tata Nano has been introduced. The Nano is being positioned as an ideal car for all two wheeler owners who would want to upgrade to a four wheeler. How on earth will any two wheeler rider who is used to getting mi...nimum 40 Kms per litre reconcile to the pitiable mile of 10 to 12 Kms per litre given by the Tata Nano ? His monthly fuel bill will shoot up to four times his current spend. The following extract from the review of a Mumbai based Tata Nano owner dated 1st October 2010 on www.mouthshut.com tells it all. “Tata Nano Mileage is abysmally poor : best that I could get was 10.8 km / litre and worst was 9.9 km / litre. I have covered 7000 Kms till date and have filled in around 666 litres of petrol (average fuel bill of Rs. 2800 per month) with an absolutely lousy mileage of 10.5 Kms per litre. Is it any surprise that the Tata Nano sales has plummeted to 509 cars in November 2010 ?Read More

This poor mileage problem is something that I have been pointing out all along. My Nano LX which is exactly one year old (purchased it on 9th November 2009) is consistently giving me a mileage of just 10.5 Kms per litre for the past one year. Just imagine the number of litres of petrol I would ...have saved in one year if this wretched car had given me even 16 to 18 Kms per litre as against the ARAI announced mileage of 23.6 Kms per litre. My Nao has covered 6000 Kms till date. Tata Motors should be absolutely ashamed of themselves instead of showing off this pathetic car to the US President & his wife. What is the answer that Tata Motors has to all the unwary customers who have bought this low mileage car other than maintaining stoic silence ?Read More

There have been absolutely contradictory reviews about the mileage of the Tata Nano on portals like Cardheko and Mouthshut. While some Nano owners have written that they are getting an excellent mileage of 21 Km per litre in City Traffic with the AC on there are other Nano owners who have written th...at they are getting only 10 Km per litre or even lesser in City Traffic with the AC on. How can there be such a wide variation of over 50% in fuel average whatever the driving conditions or driving skills may be ? Mr. R Gopala Krishnan - Senior Manager - Customer Support, Tata Motors Chennai has driven my Nano along with a two member Plant Testing Team for three days and has orally confirmed that my Nano gives only 10.5 Kms in City Traffic. Surprisingly, he has also confirmed that my Nano also gave him a mileage of 23 Km per litre when he tested it on the Highway. I have tested my Nano on the Highway with a diagnostics laptop attached and the mileage recorded was only 18 Km per litre. From what I have gathered in the last six months speaking to several Nano owners in Chennai and Kolkatta is that most of the Nano’s are giving 16 to 18 + Kms per litre in City Traffic with the AC on and the mileage apparently goes as high as 21 Km per litre as can be seen from the recent reviews of some Nano owners. At the same time, there are a handful of unfortunate defective Nano owners like me who are consistently getting just 10 to 11 Km per litre in City Traffic with the AC on. I am still waiting for Tata Motors to break their silence and come forward to do whatever needs to be done to my defective Nano so that I also get a mile of 16 to 18 Km per litre. Read More

At the outset thank you for responding to my review. It is great to hear that a Nano is capable of giving 21 Km per litre in City Traffic. However, my Nano is giving me just 10.5 Kms per litre i.e. exactly half the mileage that you are getting in City Traffic. Obviously there is something ...seriously faulty with my car as a result of which it is giving such poor mileage. Mr. Ramesh Kumar, a Senior Manager with Tata Motors at Chennai has written to me stating that 10.5 Km per litre is 'very appreciable mileage' in city traffic. Mr Gopala Krishnan another Senior Manage with Tata Motors at Chennai has driven my Nano and tested it for 3 days with a two member Plant testing team and he has also confirmed that my Nano is giving a mileage of only 10.5 Km per litre in City Traffic. Howevr, Tata Motors is refusing to take any action to resolve this low mileage issue and are maintaining stoic silence. I have provided them with enough irrefutable data compiled after testing the car for over six months and 2500 Kms to confirm that my Nano is giving me only 10.5 Km per litre. I do hope reviews like yours will make these Tata Motors Senior Managers at Chennai realise their folly and take some action to repair my Nano which is definitely .faulty.Read More

Apart from your observations, there is also the crucial issue of very poor mileage of just 10.5 Kmpl. I have tested my Nano on six consecutive occasions and each time the mileage obtained was around 10.5 Kmpl I have sent any number of mails to Tata Motors but they are just not willing to accept that... there is problem with the engine of my car. Initially they attributed this poor mileage to bad driving and gave me a lot of driving tips but recently a team from the Plant came and tested the car and confirmed that the car gave a mileage of only 10.5 Kms per litre on the same route that I take to Office and back. They also stated that the same car gave them a mileage of 23 Kms per litre on the Highway. This is obviously a very desperate and ridiculous statement. However, they blatantly refuse to put down in writing the results of the mileage tests they conducted with my car from 19th to 21st May 2010. I was given a 30 minute presentation on 21st May 2010 after the tests during the course of which Mr. Gopala Krishnan, Senior Manager – Service at Chennai confirmed the following : 1) My Tata Nano gave a mileage of 10.5 Kms per litre when tested by their testing team in the same route that I travel to Office and back in peak time city traffic. (This clearly reconfirms the data gathered by me after testing my Nano for six consecutive full tank to full tank testings). 2) My Tata Nano gave an improved mileage (not sure what the figure is) when the testing was done by their testing team at two other time schedules in lesser traffic. 3) My Tata Nano gave a mileage of 23 Kms per litre when tested by their testing team on the By Pass Road upto Tambaram (Highway) I had purchased this car only after seeing an article in the media in which ARAI had stated that the Tata Nano was the most fuel efficient car in India which returned a mileage of 23.6 Kms per litre. It is only a question of time before the bubble bursts.Read More

This Nano LX owner has clearly mentioned that his Nano gives him a mileage of 20 Kms per litre in the city with AC and 24 Kms per litre on the highway with AC. However, my Nano LX is giving me only 10.5 Kms per litre in the city traffic with AC i.e just 50% of the mileage given by another Nano. The fuel average of Tata Nano is very very poor. I own a Nano LX and after driving it for around for more than six months and around 3000 Kms I can boldly confirm that the Tata Nano gives only 10.5 Kms per litre which is pathetic. I have enough rock solid data to prove this. I have sent any number o...f mails to Tata Motors and after testing my car they are saying absurd things like my Nano gives 10.5 Km per litre in city traffic but the same car gives 23 Km per litre on the Highway. Has anyone heard of anything more stupid and ridiculous than this. I am not able to undrerstand how one of the most respected and ethical Corporates in India is blatantly furnishing such data orally (they are hesitating to put it in writing) to avoid resolution of customer complaints.Read More

You are right. Though the upfront cost is low and engine capacity is just 624 cc the fuel cost is comparatively high. It is more or less similar to other midsize cars. I have bought the Nano only on the basis of the following article which appeared in the media on 10th April 2009. Tata Nan...o is the most fuel-efficient car in India Friday, April 10, 2009, 9:26 The Automobile Research Association has said that the Tata Nano consumes lesser fuel than any other car running on the Indian roads. The Automobile Research Association Of India announced that the Tata Nano gives a mileage of 23.6 km/ltr, followed by Maruti A-star that gives a mileage of 19.6 km/ltr. So now you have an answer to the most important question about cars in India: “But what’s the mileage?” Now you know. The Maruti Alto is the third most fuel-efficient car, in the petrol car category, along with the Hyundai i10 that returns a fuel-efficiency of 19.6 km per litre. The Maruti Alto has been the most fuel-efficient car in India for the past ten years. It is extremely unfortunate that the supposedly Most Fuel Efficient Car in India is giving only 10.7 Kms per litre in city traffic driving conditions with the AC on all the time. I feel terribly let down. S. Prabhakar Read More
