Honestly I dont own a tata nano but has since driven it and collected most information on it . As a mechanical engineer I am very much concerned abt the engine noise, good engines are very quiet and efficient .since there is less wear and tear inside it . The problem I found particularly with tata engines is that they are very noise, if u take any of their car or they become noisy when u drive at 90 plus speeds. TATA VISTA is successfull only after They started fitting engine from FIAT inside it . When I compare the Engines from TATA to the engines from Hyundai or maruti the difference is clearly heard and seen . Variation of Mileage from car to car as I seen it on Blogs here points to poor quality maintenence during production phase of vehicle, Becoz such a steep variation in mileage is not seen in any brand re is also another point.

The cost of petrol is rising day by day and once it breaches 135$ then most of the NANO owners would think of alternate fuel like CNG or LPG and hence may want these kits to be intalled in NANO . For their information TATA NANO is not allowed to have any of these kits by Road transport authority for reasons of safety, and if NANO has ample cabin space, also there is no space to have the CNG or LPG cylinders in NANO ..

One more thing we must keep in mind is that Maruti or any other brand available has a strong support of R and D behind it and they are having a long experience with the production of small and efficient cars while TATA started off much later and everybody complains of TATA after sales service( As I read on blogs and personally felt too) Even FIAT after its joint venture with TATA for sale and service of FIAT cars is having great nighmares . not only this the other products like voltas AC also having poor aftersales service.

I do agree that space within the NANO is good and all the other stuff but at what cost? At the cost of cheaper fuel alternatives, so if running ALTO for 30, 000 Kilometers on Gas would give you savings of 60000 to 90, 000 Rs, this was precisely the reason for myself not going to purchase a NANO

the heart of the car is engine and noisy engines are absolutely sure to give problems now or later

There are two more things that I wish to add

  1. if TATA is so sure of NANO, then why does not it introduce TATA europa and tata Pixel which are having a 3 cylinder engine in INDIA . possible reason is that indians would be able to compare between these models and the problems of nano would become more evident .

  2. There has been a case of NANO which met with an accident, now the service centre guys, have informed that the insurance company is refusing to sanction the amount involved in replacing the Plastic parts of NANO, and the plastic portion involved in building a NANO is significantly higher than the Metal components, so if some unfortunate NANO guy meets an accident then the repairing cost for NANO would be significantly higher than any other car

3 There are some insurance schemes which also insure the plastic components of a car, but ask any insurance agent abt insuring NANO for such a scheme and he would surely give a cold face for it, I asked this to insurance agents myself
