Yes, unfortunately Tata has still not been able to improve its service quality...also, small quality issues remain, like door handles coming off or inside bits'n'pieces of trim tend to work loose. But, on the whole, I'm quite satisfied with the value I'm getting considering the money paid (Tata cars... are not only far cheaper to purchase, but costs are probably amongst the lowest).Read More

Finished around 4000 km and the ride has become smoother / engine still feels as good as new. Getting an average of 14+ km/litre in Andheri traffic with A/C on all the time. Did one trip on the Expressway to Lonavala and back, getting 17 km/litre with A/C on all the time.

Great to know that you are getting a good average with your vehicle. It looks like the car I bought must be a defective piece. Just curious to know what average are you getting with A/C on all the time ? Actually, the poor mileage that I was getting was with A/C on all the time. Apparently, this... is an issue with the Nano...most of the time people are calculating the average without the A/C, whereas I drive with the A/C always on and in city traffic. Even so, I feel the average should not have been so poor, for such a small car with a tiny engine.Read More

You have hit the nail on the head in the last line : waiting period in today's market is a sure recipe for disaster...Nano had a waiting period of one year...today the boot is on the other foot, with car owners cancelling previous bookings. As a matter of fact, the waiting period is not quite ov...er...dealers now have a waiting period to get the vehicles out of their showrooms :) Engine specs sound nice on paper...after a test-drive, found that the engine is a major let-down...not at all responsive or even eager to accelerate...just maintains a dull plodding pace...if you are looking for a taxi-type drive or have the driver at the wheel whilst engaged with your laptop on the back seat, maybe this won't really be much of an issue :) Coming to the other issue of brand name, that is no more a sure-fire recipe for success...there have been so many cases of new models from supposedly premium brands flopping miserably, if the buyer does not perceive the value :(Read More

Just had a test drive of the Etios VX and the first impression was that the interiors are too bland...the red upholstery is quite revolting (no option to go for a leather interior) and the door handles are still of the lift-type (old era of Indica / Esteem). Engine was also a major let-down : May...be I was expecting much more refinement (hearing about the supposedly famed Toyota quality), but it is not even a patch on the fantastically smooth and free-revving Quadrajet found in the Swift Dzire / Vista / Manza / Linea / Punto.Read More

Further to earlier review, have done the first servicing at Concord Motors Worli and now finished about 3000 km. Experience at the Service Centre is not so good...quality of service needs to be much improved...Tata needs to monitor the work done and improve as most of the time the work is slow /... behind schedule / lots of complaints from customers, which are rarely, if ever, followed-up by the company. However, the better quality of the Vista ensures, that you rarely need to visit the Service Centre, at least for the first few years :) So far, the driving experience has been top notch. Ride n handling is good. Fuel efficiency is superb...I'm driving around 35 km to office daily using the Western Express Highway for most of the journey...Morning ride is relatively peaceful with much less traffic, but evening bumper-to-bumper traffic is awful...to my pleasant surprise, the Quadrajet Vista is already returning 15.5 - 16 km per litre in the city drive, with Air Conditioning on. Commendable...far better than what my Indigo TDI could ever give (best was 14 km/litre in city). Highway driving on the Mumbai Pune Expressway is also fantastic, with the suspension soaking-up bumps / rough patches easily and the engine effortlessly dishing out power. Not yet checked the average on the highway due to infrequent trips. NVH is so improved (as compared to my earlier Indigo TDI) that its difficult to tell the speed from inside. All in all I would use one phrase to sum it up...Paisa vasool :)Read More

Absolutely agree with the idea of wait-and-watch in the case of new models. Even established manufacturers are rushing out untested models in the hope of getting at least a small piece of the shrinking market. Shrinking : because with so many manufacturers trying to fill-up every single niche with... a variety of models, the predictable result is, that a majority of the new ones are going to flop...survival of the fittest ?Read More

Tata Motors are trying to fix this fuel efficiency problem with some major modifications to the Bosch fuel system of the Nano. The only problem is, how will this benefit the thousands of owners who have already bought the car ? Believe they are also fitting power steering. A case of too little to...o late...the bad news about fuel efficiency has already dealt a major blow to Nano sales, from which it unlikely to recover. If you remember the Standard 2000 (introduced in India at the turn of the century), this suffered the same fate, when it was found that its average was 3 km/litre :)Read More

One small problem : When I requested for spare key, I was initially given one without a Transponder (which should unlock the Engine Immobiliser). It took me four visits to finally get the correct key / not a very pleasant experience for a customer. Also, the people at Tata Service Centre, Worli, wer...e not conversant with this / there was no system for an owner to get a key made, without having to make frequent trips.Read More

I confirmed with Tata (after first servicing) about completion of 'running-in' (at around 1000 km), after which they said that the vehicle can now be run at high speed. They also confirmed that Nano can be taken upto max 105 km / hr, after which the fuel injection is cut-off, so its not possible to ...over-speed. Though its not recommended to drive at this speed. A safe speed is around 80 km/hr. By the way, driving a car at a high speed should not lead to engine problems, such as vibrations / rough idling. When I complained about this problem to the Tata workshop, they could not find the reason and commented that this was a one-off case / maybe defect in gear-box.Read More

Nano sales have taken a beating : this month, stocks have been piling-up at Dealerships / too many unsold vehicles is bad news. Whether this has more to do with public perception (unreliability / teething troubles of a new product) or due to its poor fuel efficiency is yet to be seen. I think ...buying a tried-and-tested product is a safer alternative, than taking a chance with the Nano (at least till they have ironed out the bugs).Read More

Now that I've sold-off the Nano, I'm able to comment on my (past) experience : I've had the Nano for around 5 - 6 months and decided to get rid of it basically because there were a lot of problems (already mentioned in my review) which the Dealer couldn't solve. Having said that, the car is r...easonably comfortable, cheap to buy / repair and is quite nimble to use in city traffic, especially useful for parking in small spaces. Mileage is pretty poor : in the city with A/C, I was getting around 9 - 10 km/litre, which is not bad for a big vehicle, but pretty poor for such a small / compact car. If you drive without the A/C, the mileage is quite a bit better (you could get around 14 + km / litre, but the whole idea of a city car is that it should have air-conditioning, so that you don't have to breathe the polluted air outside. On the highway, its quite an un-settling experience : you can do max. around 90 - 100 km / hr flat-out, but the engine sounds very rough and it feels dangerously unstable. If you stick to 60 - 80 km/hr, it feels ok, but this speed is too less for the highway. Since space is at a premium in a micro-car like this, they have put the car battery below the driver's seat and the jack / handle below the front passenger's seat :) The rear has the engine, whilst the bonnet has enough space to keep your toothbrush and shaving kit only ! Another problem is the combination of poor average and tiny fuel tank (just 15 litres), which means that if you get 9 km / litre, you can do (max) 9 x 15 = 135 km before you need to refill. Thus you need to visit the petrol pump every five - six days (depending on your running), which is extremely irritating (at least for me !), as my Vista gives me 18 km / litre x 37 litre (fuel tank capacity) = 650 km range. As I do around 1000 km per month, this means that I can now fill-up just once in a month. Otherwise, the Nano is a very easy car to drive and (if you consider its price) reasonablRead More

Service experience with Tata is, unfortunately, the largest single problem area. They just don't have the quality / experience / attitude to impress the customer. Although Tata vehicles have improved considerably, but fit ' n ' finish is still extremely poor and needs to be addressed. Just taken delivery of a brand new Indica Vista Quadrajet last month, after disposing off my Nano (at a loss of Rs.85000). The Quadrajet is fantastic value-for-money. Superb ride / handling, excellent pick-up and finally (the icing in the cake) already getting an average of 14 km/litre even during ...the running-in period.Read More

Finally managed to sell off the Nano...considering the fact that I bought my car this year for around 2 1/4 lakhs, the re-sale price that I got was extremely poor...just 1.28 lakhs. For a car to be sold at such a loss, within the Warrantee period, is an indication of the quality (lack of quality ?) ...as perceived by the market.Read More

Your review seemed like something pulled out of a product brochure...it would have been more informative if you could give your personal experience, rather than just quoting torque figures which are available in any magazine.

Ashu, I don't think its a good idea to generalise and make a statement that all Tata cars are bad...its possible that you got a bad piece. I've had a very good experience with my Tata Indigo, which I've used for 5 years / 60000 km without any major problems. Minor problems are always prese...nt in any car / any make... Tata service is definitely not very good, but otherwise the cars are generally quite sturdy and reliable. By the way, I find it rather hard to believe that one car could have so many defective parts :)Read More

Dear DeepKishore I am owning a Nano and facing many problems, but to be fair, this car is still in the trail stage / facing many teething problems. When the Indica was introduced, my colleague had such a problem, that the car's engine had to be changed. However, when I bought my Indigo in 2005, I g...ot a good car which is still running well, as Tata has now ironed out the teething problems. Anyway, the Nano has its good points and also certain short-comings. It is still the cheapest car money can buy today. However, at that price, it does not come with the frills that we expect from (more expensive) cars, hence it is not really fair to compare this with others. The bad point (still there) is the poor quality of service / frustrating experience with the Service centres, as they are still used to dealing with commercial vehicles and not aware about how to deal with people. In this respect, they still have a long way to go. By the way, the Nano is neither air-cooled, nor does it overheat after 50 kms, as I've driven more than 2000 km in Mumbai traffic, without any problem of overheating.Read More

Dear Pradeepmir, You contact me on vikram.m.gokhale@gmail.com for any information. By the way, are you officially connected with Tata Motors ? If so, then maybe you can help get my problem sorted out, as I'm pretty fed-up with the car / if nothing can be done, I would have to sell it off at a loss.
