Reviewed Motorola MOTO RAZR V3

(Updated May 02, 2007 10:52 AM)

Folks, this is to alert you to a massive rip-off being perpetrated on consumers by Motorola India. I had bought a Motorola Razr V3 GSM phone in June 2006. Within 2 months, the main LCD display started flickering. It was replaced under warranty by Motorola’s outsourced(3rd party) service provi...Read more

Metro is a useless dealer. When I used to own an Ikon, I had several arguements with them. Cauvery Ford is supposed to be slightly better, though they are located quite far away -- that is, if you live in the heart of Bangalore city, or in the Eastern subarbs. IMHO, the fundamental problem with F...ord is that they don't invest time into their dealerships. Contrast with Hyundai or Maruti and you would know what I mean. A complaint to MUL has the dealer following up with you 10 times a day, since MUL takes very stringent action against erring dealers. When I had complained against Metro Ford, and a fundamental design flaw with the Ikon (see my review elsewhere), I had actually met with officials from Ford India who were visiting Bangalore. It made absolutely no difference to them. I say this out of personal experience -- having owned both a Ikon 1.6 ZXi (in the past) and several Maruti vehicles as well. MUL's attention to customer complaints -- at least in my experience -- is truely phenomenal. Disclaimer: I am not a MUL employee, just one amongst their millions of customers. I have also experience good service from Hyundai dealers in Bangalore, when 1 of my relatives had to take his Santro for repairs.Read More

Excellent review -- though I agree with the others that readability would've been vastly improved if you had not used 'SMS' language! My only complaint with Motorola is their awful name search and slightly cumbersome menus. For eg. on Nokia you can access the SMS entry screen in 1 touch - on the ...Razor it's 3 menu options before you access it. Similarly searching for a name is painful on the Razor - you type in few letters and press 'search' -- whereas on Nokia you can see the display keep changing as you type in the first few letters of the name. BTW, a disclaimer -- I don't work for Nokia ;-) Just that I've switched to a Razor after 3-4 years of using various Nokia phones, so am experiencing 'culture shock' so to say with the new menus! BUT, the looks of the Razor compensate for everything else!!Read More

The Razor v3 is a great phone overall -- killer looks, a keyboard which is unique, good reception and an okay enough battery. What I dislike is the cumbersome messaging and terrible name search -- especially as I'm used to Nokia's almost intuitive features for both these functions. For searching ...a name, you have to type in the first few characters and then press 'search' -- whereas in Nokia the name list keeps refreshing as you key in the first few letters of the name. Sending an SMS is also very easy in Nokia -- just 1 keypress to get into the text editor. Whereas, on the Razor you have to have a minimum of 3 menu options to choose, before you can access the SMS screen. Other than that, the Razor is great.Read More

I agree that Bimal is probably one of the worst dealers in Bangalore. I was shopping for a vehicle last year and had approached both Bimal and Pratham. Bimal even hid information on Maruti-supplied discounts from me and wanted to charge me almost double when I wanted to change from tubed to tubeless... tyres at the showroom. One of my friends showed me a newspaper ad. wherein Maruti's discounts were clearly stated -- which the Pratham Motors sales guy was very honest and transparent in informing me about. He also quoted me half of Bimal's prices for the tyre change! When I asked Bimal chaps, they denied not having told me about the discount, and started arguing about the 'quality' of the tubeless tyres they were going to give me !! Needless to say, I bought my car from Pratham -- and have never regretted since then. All my services have also been done at Pratham only.Read More

Agree that the Elantra is a nice car. But, the car has horrible resale value due to Hyundai's crazy pricing, and then the dealers heavily discounting the car -- especially in March -- just to meet sales targets. You might have considered the CRDi diesal version, if your running is on the higher s...ide. I hear that the diesal Elantra gives almost 14 kmpl in city driving and 2-3 kmpl more on highway. That makes it a truely amazing value for money proposition in that segment. Congratulation on your new car, and enjoy the ride!Read More

The Wagon-R is indeed a nice car from the engine point of view. But I found body roll very pronounced on the car, when compared to a Santro and more so when compared to a Santro Xing. The gears also felt vague and mushy. But after-sales service is fantastic, courtesy the Maruti network. Overall, an ...okay car for short distance city commutes, but would need a rethink if highway driving is also involved.Read More

Hi Hari Brilliant review [or is it 'article' :-) ] but as the owner of a Toyota Corolla, I must disagree with your high praise for the car. Agreed the car is brilliant ......... BUT the company that sells it, and it's dealers nation-wide, are a big disappointment. Read my review on the Coroll...a dealers (http://www.mouthshut.com/readreview/50844.html) and on the car itself (http://www.mouthshut.com/readreview/40614.html) Also read actual user experiences by Mr. Hiten Mehta and some others. Basically, for a D-segment car, just a damn good machine is not enough -- you also need a responsive and caring company, which is willing to 'walk the talk' as far as it's lofty promises of 'touching the perfection' are concerned. Toyota Kirloskar Motors is defintely not that (see also my comments on my interaction with TKM). So, as long as the OWNERSHIP EXPERIENCE on a Corolla is pathetic, the car will remain a lowly rated vehicle for me. Nor am I likely to buy another Toyota vehicle in a hurry -- not in India at least. Take care MenonRead More

Finally, Calicut City per se may not have much to see and do – apart from shopping for handloom cloth, the famous Calicut halwa and wonderful brass handicrafts, not to mention a bewilderingly wide selection of gold jewellary. This stems from Calicut’s history as being a gateway to the ti...mber and spice trade of Malabar. But, use Calicut town as a gateway to both Wyanad (Sultan’s Battery, Kalpetta, Vythiri etc.) as also to nearby places like Bekal Fort, the various resorts near Feroke, the lovely beaches on the way to Cannanore (now called Kannur) etc. And dear drifter, neither am I a tourist or a person on a punishment posting – I’m a person born somewhere in the north of India, now living in this silicon-pretender city of Bangalore, and a regular visitor to Calicut ………… or, as the locals call it, Kozhikode. While Calicut city does have it’s shortcomings, I for one would not agree one little bit with your regret for it not becoming another boring apology-for-a-metro. And thank god for that !!Read More

Hi Drifter It's a pity that Calicut managed to drive you up the proverbial coconut tree! C'mon now, how many days did you actually spend at Calicut? Surely, a town which had Vasco da Gama visiting it in 1498, a town which gave to the world VK Krishna Menon etc. can't be all that bad. Granted... that Calicut is not as 'happening' as say namma Bengaluru or singara Chennai or amchi Mumbai ......... but it would be a real pity if this town of the Zamorins did become that. After all, one goes to visit distant places to see new things ……… not the same mall-infested, traffic-clogged, chokingly-polluted carbon copies of yet another bursting-at-the-seams wannabe-metro. You also go overboard calling it a town where 'women exhibit the wit of a gnat' etc. etc. A town which has an REC (Regional Engineering College) AND an IIM (Indian Institue of Management), plus several colleges with turn-of-the-century lineage (Guruvayurappan College, St. Joseph's College-Devagiri, Malabar Christian College, Providence College) AND several great schools, cannot be home to such dumb people! As regards cuisine, all I can say is that coconut oil is as intrinsic to the diet of the average Keralite, as mustard oil is to the average Bengali, or olive oil to the average Italian. Anyways, if you are so careful about food, and don’t want to try the absolutely wonderful local (fresh) sea food or veg food, you could go to any of the local places and ask them to serve you (sigh! How utterly unimaginative and boring!) tandoori roti and dal makhani. Of course, this is akin to going to an Andhra joint and asking for Tandoori food, or going to a Chinese restaurant and asking for pizza. Read More

Hi Vijay It is indeed a pity that you are also facing almost similar experience at dealerships that both I and Mr. Hiten Mehta (Mumbai) are facing. It is a pity that Toyota Kirloskar Motor Co. is so careless in appointing dealers -- and then not bothering to follow up to check whether their dealers... are competent and careful. I believe that this is more to do with the completely inept management locally at TKM. After all, the Toyota Corolla is one of the most popular and best-selling cars worldwide, and even all our experiences indicate that the car's mechanical performance is really superb -- especially when compared with cars like the Optra, Octavia (petrol) etc. If anyone has any suggestion on how to contact the parent company -- i.e. Toyota Motor Co. of Japan (e-mail id., specific person to contact etc.) -- then please do tell us. It is in the collective interest of all Corolla owners, that we get the management of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Co., India in good shape -- so our (expensive!) cars are looked after well. Hello Hiten It's a real pity that Toyota Kirloskar Motor Co. is taking Indian consumers for a right royal ride. The title of your review says it all ! I have a manual transmission version of the car, and have had MAJOR service problems with their dealer in B'lore. To be honest, I have not experi...enced the squeaking noise on the brakes that you report, but I am not at all happy with the braking performance -- I always have the feeling that I have to keep a huge margin of safety with the Corolla. I wonder if there is any way to directly reach out to Toyota Motor Co. folks in Japan, and inform them as to how much their reputation is being spoilt by TKM in India. After all, both the Corolla and Camry are very popular cars worldwide, and it's very strange that the same cars have so many problems here in India -- a pointer to defective manufacturing processes/practises perhaps? Not sure whether the Reva will ever really succeed. The car is far too cramped and small to be practical. Since I'm from Bangalore, I've seen quite a few of these and frankly am appalled by the small size and flimsiness of the vehicle. Since the Reva is being positioned as a 'city car', I really ...wish the manufacturers had paid more attention to safety. The way the BMTC buses drive in Bangalore city, just 1 swipe by any of them will be enough to wreck the Reva (and any unfortunate occupants inside). The manufacturers claim 80 km for a fully charged battery -- but I notice your experience shows it can do only 60. Overall, my vote still remains with fossil-fuel burning CARS instead of eco-friendly toys :-))Read More

Agree with you that the Hebbal flyover is well done -- though ANY flyover on Bangalore seems to take much longer to build than anywhere else in India :-) Instead of such a complicated structure, I wonder whether a simple 4 lane flyover, with a round-about below would have sufficed? It would ha...ve not only saved on construction costs, but also (perhaps) helped speed up construction and completion. MenonRead More

Lovely review and looks like you're enjoying your car ;-) BTW, I used to own a Cielo GLE and got marginally better mileage. Try using petrol additives to push the mileage up. Didn't have the guts to try the LPG option myself, as I had once witnessed an LPG-equipped Maruti van blow up in front ...of my eyes. Of course, I guess technology (and safety) have improved dramatically since those days. Your running cost numbers are truely amazing -- I think you'll give the autowallahs a complex with those running costs ;-)) Cheers MenonRead More

Hi Ganesh & Nandu Thanks for your comments. The Ravindu guys took the car and fixed the noise. Initially, they tried to pass it off as noise being caused by an extra rear-view mirror I had clipped-on over the existing RV mirror. When I pointed out that I had the mirror right from the begi...nning, and that the noise has started up only 6 months AFTER I had bought the car, they backed off. Problem is, I don't think they have any clue whatsoever as to what is the root cause. The service technician mumbled something about 're-routing all the stereo and A/C cables' when I asked him what exactly he had done. Ganesh, I don't think sueing either TKM (Toyota Kirloskar Motor Co.) or Ravindu will help. The case will probably take years to come up for hearing, and I doubt if I could get any relief. Nandu, I did write to TKM management. The first letter to the MD of TKM was responded to by their DGM (Marketing) who basically brushed me off and referred me back to the same dealer ! I wrote another letter to their Marketing Manager, which has not been even acknowledged. I suspect that the root cause of the problem is that TKM and it's dealers have got so used to selling MPV's (the Qualis) to large fleet owners (tourist taxi operators), that they just do not think like a CAR company any more. The only way out is to hope that someone from TKM (or the parent Toyota Motor Co.) reads the review (and these comments) and initiates some remedial actions at TKM.Read More
