the priceless glow

A Sunday morning. The day began at 7:00am with a cup of tea, Times of India and biscuits. The view from my terrace on the sixth floor was refreshing. Green hills receiving a light drizzle. Colorful birds and pigeons flying from one tree to another.

Sound of ruffling newspaper was breaking the silence.

“You remember things we need to do today?” my wife reminded me.

And I realized that Sunday is a day for all pending works and keeping promises too.

We had promised our three and half year old daughter Navya a pair of sandals and a small chair. This was pending for a long time and Navya used to remind us of it in between.

We decided to go shopping after brunch. After buying a bright Red small chair for her, we proceeded for another store for sandals. We finally bought her a pair of Pink Barbie sandals. She sat on a high stool while trying different sandals and we didn’t make her walk as these fitted well. A small pair of sandals for Rs. 675/-? I was wondering.

“ Mehangai badh gai hai” my wife said.

Fortunately we were able to finish shopping in less than two hours. It was 2:30 pm in the afternoon we drove back to home. Navya happily showed all the stuff to her grandparents and went to sleep.

After a short nap I started surfing channels on tv. It was 5:30 pm in the evening Navya woke up and came searching for the new stuff. After playing with the new chair, she wanted to go to the garden. It was drizzling and getting dark outside. We asked her to wear the pair of her old slippers as it was slightly muddy outside. She insisted on new sandals and we told her “Wear the old one, I will give the new one when we reach the garden.” I told Navya. We thought she will get busy in the garden and will not ask for the new sandal. We were wrong. She asked for it as soon as we reached the garden.

Me, my wife and my parents sat on a bench. Navya wore the sandals and started walking towards the slide.

WOW! The sole of the sandals started twinkling and glowing in different colors. Navya couldn’t believe it and we too were pleasantly surprised. The sandals were glowing in the dark. She screamed with joy and we too were happy to see the sparkle in her eyes.

We realized that because we did not make her walk in the store, we did not notice that the soles of the sandals were different.

The sandal was a little expensive but the joy was priceless. Those moments were the best moments of the day.

Happy Sunday.
