~*The Test of Teaching*~

By: confusedsoul | Posted Jan 23, 2014 | Direct Dil Se | 997 Views

It is a known fact that students go through tests time to time all through their educational phase. However, there are only a handful of people who are aware of the test a Teacher goes through.

A teacher undergoes a test every class. But today my focus isn't on the general class preparation as that's something you are well aware of. Today I wish to share with you all my experience of teaching English as a Foreign Language.

I teach in an International school and apart from many NRI students, there are quite a few Koreans in the school. Last year an 8 year old girl from Korea joined my school. She had no knowledge of English whatsoever.

Being a Language expert, I was asked to teach her everything right from a, b, c along with the sounds etc., In a span of 8 months the girl picked up the language so well that she has written a poem on her own.

This came as a pleasant surprise to the teachers and many others. The reason for this achievement was her dedication. She have been the only student in my entire teaching career to be so young and yet regular at homework submission.

Initially, I found teaching her a bit of a challenge however with time I learned how to utilize her strength. Her major strength is her command over Korean language. I downloaded Korean to English dictionary on my iPad and also showed her images of every new word I introduced while teaching. This worked wonders for her.

I believe as a teacher it is quite challenging to cater to the needs of various students. However, with concepts like Differentiated Instructions(DI) incorporated in teaching, the process has become more effective.

And certainly the role of a learner himself plays a crucial role. I strongly feel that if we as a parent/sibling encourage the students around us to be focused they can certainly make the most of what schools provide.
