The Letter Box

7th-October-2009, when we shifted to our new apartment (rental) at Vizag, we were informed by the owner that the postman will drop letters in the letter box, which is at the ground floor. So it would be better if we check everyday for any letter for us. Each flat has a separate letter box.

In the world of e-mails, do we still get letters? I wondered.

Of course, the post offices still exist, doesn’t that mean that people still get letters. This thought answered my question.

Rarely do I get an e-mail from a friend or relative even though I keep my gmail open whole day (almost) & expecting a letter was something out of the box. But soon I developed the habit of checking the letter box everyday, expecting some letters. To find the box empty but not till last week when I found a letter addressed to me.

WOW! Sent by the bank where I have applied for a credit card. I opened the letter to read, “Dear Mr. Singh, we regret to inform you that your application has not been accepted for the credit card as we found your documents incomplete. However thanks for showing interest in our bank.”

Documents incomplete? Didn’t their representative say that all the papers were in order and I should get my credit card within 3 weeks? I didn't want the credit card but this representative was after me since weeks to take a card, so finally I gave up after listening to the advantages mentioned by him & applied for one.

So the first letter that I received brought the news that actually made me happy, because credit card is the plastic that kills. I used to have 3 in Bahrain & only I know how I paid the amount back to the banks.

Everyday at 6 pm when I return home from office, I still open the letter box to check for any letter and I always find it empty. But it’s a hope against hope, who knows someday I’ll receive a letter from someone after all I have given my postal address to many.
