Smartphones Making Us Dumb

It’s clear that today’s technology makes life easier and in some cases more disturbing. Just if we take a quick look around us we can easily spot many things that we’d hate to live without, from laptops to tabs & especially to Smartphones.

Modern technology has affected our lives in many ways. Today most of the people are spending a large part of their spare time on social networking sites, internet, chatting, viewing movies, playing games, searching etc and have very little or no time left to meet friends or relatives & spend some time with them.

Today's generation cannot live without mobile phones, they are so much hooked to mobiles and the Internet that depriving them of their cell phones, mails & social networking sites could leave them suffering from symptoms similar to those seen in drug addicts trying to give up.

Last week my four friends & I went to a resort near Sakleshpur. At the beginning of our journey we all were so busy in our cell phone conversations that we rarely exchanged few words with each other. Though we all were in the same car but we were conversing not with each other but were on busy on our cell phones conversing with other people. When we entered the thick forest of Western Ghats & the signal started dropping we started interacting with each other.

Mobile phones are making us unsocial. Even the regular exchange of words between the friends is being interrupted by mobiles. Thank God very soon we realized that we were talking not to each other but busy on our cell phones talking others or sending messages. We also thanked all the mobile service providers for ‘no network coverage.’ For the next two days we had a very peaceful time without our mobile phones.

These peaceful two days has taught us some important lessons on mobile ethics & related issues. When we started thinking on the time we spend on our cell phones we were shocked, we actually spend more time on our mobile phones than with our family or friends. On an average we spend more than two hours a day using cell phone & the time we spend with our family is hardly an hour per day.

When technology was not so advanced, distance did not matter. I still remember those old days, writing letters to friends & relatives, sending greeting cards on various occasions & eagerly waiting for the reply from miles away. But in today’s advanced technology age we are so near to each other but still feel like we are very far. Proper balance between human and technology is need of the hour.

Smart phones, smart laptops, smart cars ... when are they going to start making smart people?
