Reservation for women or Women conservation- What is required?

By: cbsamanta | Posted Mar 11, 2010 | General | 568 Views

The entire country is rejoicing over the fact that women reservation bill has been passed in upper house of the parliament. No doubt it is a good step ahead and by this women will definitely able to participate in the governance of the country and can take part in decision making.

However some facts come calling in my mind which are really disturbing enough to question the effectiveness of this women reservation bill. Sometimes back . Noble lauriate economist Mr. Amartyo Sen had said that in last two decades at least 10 crore girls had gone missing. Missing means , they could have taken birth but they had been prevented from doing so. Simply put they have been murdered in mother’s womb. Can you imagine the figure 10 crores? It is mind boggling.Combined figure of girls and women murdered in the womb, died after birth due to negligence within five years of age , will be astronomical. Male to female ratio has gone abnormally low in Punjab, Haryana,Rajasthan and some other northern states. It is already below 900 for every 1000 male in some states. This means even if we reserve seats in paliament , we will not have enough women to represent those seats.

We need conservation of women first and then reserve seats for women.
