Gift – greed for unearned thing – legal or illegal gratification.

By: cbsamanta | Posted Mar 16, 2010 | General | 526 Views

We all love to get gifts. There is nothing wrong in it. We used to receive gifts from father/mother, husband/wife, brothers/sisters, all other relatives, friends or any known person. Similarly we used to give gifts to all those persons whom we like and adore; the person may be close relative, distant relative, friend etc. However, one thing is certain that the link between gift giver and gift taker should be emotional and there should not be any expectations from any side.

However in reality, what we see is exactly opposite. In our society, at times gifts are being used as a tool of illegal gratification. Particularly during diwali , it may be seen that very very costly gifts are being presented to persons who are in authority. We conveniently forget that in this world nothing comes free. When I am being presented with a costly gift and it is accepted by me from my contractor or subordinate, at that very moment, we are losing the moral authority to supervise /inspect the work of that particular contractor, or to pull up that particular subordinate when he does any mistake. This is because by accepting his/her costly gifts, we have become obliged to them and hence it has become our obligation to overlook there fault. Same is true for teachers who are accepting costly gifts from students, have no moral ground to become strict with them when required.

Now question arises why do we so easily forget this simple thing that when you are being presented with something, it is expected by the giver that you must give something in return. You can not give money or a return gift equally costly, but you can give your favour in the form of closing your eyes where required.

Basically it is human nature to hanker after unearned money. To control this nature we require proper education, moral and character building. In fact this is actual education and it is no way linked to books, it comes from inside. Who can overcome this overwhelming greed, those persons will be in different league. Fortunately such persons are still around and that is why system is running.

The most unfortunate part of this is that our society has started accepting this rampant corruption as ‘bahaduri’. One person with very little known source of income constructs a huge house which is beyond his means, nobody questions his ill gotten money rather he is being praised as a capable man , successful man.

If this is success….. Let me remain unsuccessful but happy from inside.
