Is formal education really count?

Recently one particular news item has hit the headline and then expectedly vanishes down the memory lane. I should also have forgot it conveniently … but you know… because of of my irritating habit of keep thinking some particular issue over and over again, I am unable to forget it and it keeps me pricking continuously. The news is very simple. One girl from an orthodox bramhin family from Koderma of Jharkhand, had gone to study in N.Delhi. There she fell in love with a class mate also from Bihar but from a lower caste. They wanted to marry but the idea was vehemently opposed by the girl’s family. The girl went home to convince the family and never returned. She was murdered and hanged by own family members including her mother and brothers.

There is nothing new in it as incident of honour killing is not that uncommon in north India. Some people are also trying to provide legitimavy to such honour killings.

What is astonishing in this particular case that strikes me is the fact that both the brothers of the victim are highly educated. One is Phd in engineering and other is Income tax officer. Her father is manager in a Nationalised Bank. What does this prove? It only proves that formal education has nothing to do with how a person behaves as a human being. An illiterate person would have behaved in a better way in this case if he/she has the right build up of mind and character. I believe true education is the capacity to think and act independently and to allow others to do so. Something is missing in the system which allow persons to act this way. I just failed to understand the basic necessecity of carrying out such a ghastly crime and what was the motivation?
