Hi! So this is the food carnival month at my place. Reason: M cooking for the whole of month… “Full-time…” ;) So yeh I started the journey hoping “no burns n no1 gets killed by my hands” and so far the journey is quite smooth.
So 1st day which was a Sunday, which means chholle or rajma day which papa prepares started with a lil hitch… I got up with a bad dream of a real small snailish snake with 2 mouths which looked like funnels which could breathe n expand n contract… so it just became big n one of the funnels held the door handle n pushed it down to open n POP I got up with a jerk… haah… it was a dream followed by this real bad sneeze attack… the time was 4 am and my time to get up was 5:30 am… so sneezed, sniffed the whole time n when mom knocked the door at 5:30 I was wide awake n she was so impressed her daughter was so eager to cook. ;)
Anyway, so 2nd attack was on papa’s Sunday kitchen. Previous night I had told him that he won’t hold the tablespoon at all coz it’s gonna be me cooking, all he is suppose to do is guide me… pressed by his habit he tried to take over the throne again by saying… “Oh the kitchen is too crowded! I need to make my tea!” but failed… I was all put n had the support of mom on this one. So well, when the queen was on my side, the king had to listen but instead of guiding, he sneaked out. He he…
So after so much, the cholle, turned out decent but when I make it again on the Sunday after the coming Sunday, I’ll be more satisfied. So it’s the age old tradition at my place or in many Punjabi-Jains homes… every alternate Sunday we make rajma or chholle n at my place we eat it the whole day… morn, noon, night. So ye I did the variations like we do at our place.
Another story is, the day I told folks that am gonna take over cooking for a month, I was told “cool, u’ll be welcomed with guests at our place…” ha-ha n my reaction was… “Mommy! So I think am gonna postpone it by 2 days” ;) hee hee anyway, the guests were nice coz they liked my shaahi paneer n kheer…
Yea I did mess up a bit with Jeera rice’s water but it was eatable. ;)
So all in all Day 1 which was May 1st, 2011’ came out clean. No burns n no1 was killed by my hands.
So today May 2nd, wasn’t much from my side. The guests, who had come over, had a morning flight followed by some road journey till they finally reach their homes, back in Punjab. So their breakfast along with lunch had to be packed. My mom completely disheartened me saying, she will handle it coz if I start cooking they’ll miss their flight. :( So yea whatever… I told myself not to feel bad or lose hope… I made a bit of maa ki daal for dinner with pakaudi raayta and closed with Mango Milk Shake [which bro said had fewer mangoes ;)]
So yea… day 2 which was half day for me, came n went no burns no1 was killed except for Osama [like they say]. ;)
