Girl in India

Many a times I have wondered what it is means to be a girl in India. To be truthful I would say that inspite of the education, inspite of the technological advances I have to admit a girl is still not welcome in Indian family which is crazy abt boys. As per us only a boy can carry forward a family's legacy not a girl. Girl is Parayadan. I am not talking this based on some tv shows or what I see in the media. I am telling this based on the personal experience. I am an engineer employed in a reputed software company and drawing a decent five figure salary monthly. But still my mom says she would have been much more happier if she had my younger brother in place of me. I simply can't understand the logic what difference it would have made as I am also financially helping my parents.

I have a aunt who is blessed with 3 smart daughters but is completely unhappy after the birth of her twin daughters lamenting she is not blessed with a son. I tried to explain to her multiple times there are ppl who are praying to have a kid( any kid boy or girl) and god has given her the joy of motherhood. But she is unhappy as anything and keeps on telling I am praying atleast u get a son, not a daughter.

I am sad seeing this apathy especially from a woman to a woman and these are the questions I would like to ask all those ppl who want a son to carry forward their legacy

  • If everybody gets a son whose legacy will they carry forward as men and women are needed in this planet so that the next generation is born

  • Do we know whether Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had a son or not. Who carried forward his legacy. I guess we all have to admit that India never had a Prime Minister more stronger than Mrs Indira Gandhi

  • When we say first war of Indian Independence whose name comes to our mind first. No doubt it is the scene of Rani Lakshmi bai ( Jhansi Rani)with a sword on the horse back

  • P.T. Usha, Anju Bobby, Saina Nehwal list is endless of the sportpersons that made on country proud in Asian and Olympic Games. Don't you think as a parent u will be proud of these daughters

History shows given the right oppourtunity and encouragement a girl can also carry forward their parents legacy. We worship goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. Isn't it an irony that the same we kill our daughters even before they are born. If they are born haress them as a girl, control them as teenagers and try to create a image that she has to a sub ordinate to a man and she cannot have her independant identity.
