Children - Dont they have human rights

By: mira.gopal | Posted Aug 02, 2013 | General | 643 Views

Two recent articles I read in newspaper made me write this. We have human rights activists running from pillar to post to save terrorists and criminals saying every human being has a chance to live. But what about the little girl Aditi who died in hospital because of the ill-treatment of her step-mother and what about Shafeeq who was tortured and now trying to come back to life. Dont these children have any human rights. Didnt these children deserve better. Is it the fault of only those people who did this to the poor kids or we as a society are at fault. Children are called gifts from God. They are the future. It is in the best interest of any country we nurture them in the proper way. But in our country they are class of people whose voices are not heard. Aditi's and Shafeeqs are known cases. They are innumerable cases where children are subjected to unspeakable tortures which includes trafficking, child prostitution etc. Though legistation bans child labour we can see this law is flouted in multiple areas. Childrean are also employed in hazardous industries like cracker making. If that is not enough the recent noon meal tragedy in Bihar shows our apathy towards our future generation. It's time we start looking at how we can protect the rights of children. Politicians will have no interest as these children are not vote banks for them. Hence they need to take care of their rights as the last option. But as a responsible citizen we can do a lot to improve the future of a child. For starting if we see child labour we can refuse to buy services from that firm. We can refuse to employ children as househelp. We can try to spend some time on impoverished children and help them with education. If possible atleast try to sponsor the education of one child. Listen to the cry of a child. Do not ignore it. We might be able to save a life. If every citizen of India contributes for the betterment of children in our society we will have a better society tomorrow.
