BARC Scientists make sea water drinkable

As 13 Indian states reel under a severe drought, BARC scientists have discovered a method to make sea water drinkable, 6.3 million litres everyday. They have also devised certain filtration methods to make groundwater, containing arsenic and uranium, safe to drink.

The pilot plant at Tamil Nadu's Kalpakkam, built by scientists of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre use waste steam from a nuclear reactor to purify the seawater. Its capacity is 6.3 million litre every day.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC) scientists have set up a pilot plant at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, with a capacity of 6.3 million litres per day. It uses waste steam from a nuclear reactor for sea water purification. In the process, the water is desalinated which then tastes like fresh water.

As per NDTV report, a number of these plants have been installed in Punjab, West Bengal and Rajasthan.

"Besides, BARC has developed several membranes, by which, at a very small cost, groundwater contaminated by uranium or arsenic can be purified and make fit for drinking," Dr Vyas, Director at BARC, was quoted as saying to NDTV.

The nuclear scientists have also made several household water purifiers with thin membranes and special filters to separate the contaminants to market all over drought-hit Marathwada.

Its a need of the hour discovery. Hats off to the brilliant BARC scientists!
