Award in literary term means, ‘recognition of excellence in any field’ in the form of certificates, trophies, medals, badges, pins and cash, etc. Awards are given in all fields like science, bravery, literary, society, music, art, films, and police awards. Of late cricket, food, environment, police awards have been started. This is a positive initiative going with the times. They are a source of encouragement for any child from their parents and school, though mainly given to adults.

Electronic Media, which includes T.V. and Films, have seen a drastic rise in the number of awards. T.V. which is doing comparatively, better than films these days has various channels sponsoring them. It is good. Oscar nominations include films like 127 hours and Indian music directors like A.R. Rahman. Highest Bollywood awards include Filmfare followed by Zee awards and others.

I was thrilled watching Zee awards ever since childhood, as after more than 2 decades, Salman Khan won best actor award for the film, ‘Dabangg’. Dabanng won the best film and it was a delight to watch Arbaaz Khan receiving it. Best story awards went to ‘My Name is Khan’ among the popular awards. The best actress critic award went to Aishwarya Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan got the best Jury Award.

Among Filmfare awards, Best actor and best actress award to Shahrukh Khan and Kajol respectively. The Best film went to ‘My Name is Khan and the Best director award went to Karan Johar. It would have been good to see the Debutant male award going to Aditya Roy Kapoor for ‘Guzaarish’ and ‘Action Replayy’ or Arunodya Singh for.”Yeh Saali Zindagi’. Choreography and music awards went to deserving artists with Farah Khan getting the best choreographer award. Films like Aisha, Well Done Abba made their mark in the gen-next style of films. Peepli Live was also noticed. Women directors are making a mark now, with Dhobi Ghat.

Food awards on NDTV Good Times were really interesting in this time of high inflation rates. Cricket is business these days, more than fun. Hence the awards! Then there are controversies arising after award ceremonies. This makes me think, ‘Have awards lost their true meaning’, in a few cases.
