Thought of adding this for information. For repairs of this machine I then summoned a local machine repairer. He was no role model and also took his own sweet time but then he repaired the machine for Rs 4000. The machine is now working ok so far, so far so good.
What I missed mentioning in my ori...ginal review is that the machine was working before the IFB service person opened it for examination. It was making big noise and so we had called him to check. After I asked him to shut the machine back, not opting to repair as he was quoting too high, the machine won't work. He promptly charged me for the visit and was shamelessly defiant about the machine not working anymore after he touched it, saying I need to get the repairs done and he can't do anything about it.
Before this, when I told him his quote is too high, he tried to sell me the AMC, for about Rs 2000 and then wait for some days for it to take effect and then do the repairs, paying some partial cost. All this was really enough to make anyone feel sick of it all.

I get the economics outlined by you, but the question really is, should the life of a washing machine from a leading manufacturer be about 4 years? If that is the premise then let me say that it does not sound quite nice frankly. I don't know how many people would be happy with washing mac...hine having life of about 4 years. I am using the term 'life' as if major repairs are required after that time, costing as much as half the original cost, it's like renewal, and so the life of majority of parts is, by deduction, 4 years. More over more things can always keep breaking after the repairs of these parts. To make my point, I would like to mention that I have seen wahsing machines lasting for something like 10 years or so, even on this site there are few reviews like that. Not that they don't require repairs, but thay certainly don't come anywhere near half the original cost.
So the point is, how long should a machine reasonably last, and how expensive repairs it should ask for in its lifetime? And so what is acceptable as a reasonable life and during the life a reasonable cost of repairs? In my view, for this machine of mine the life is too short and the cost of repairs thereof is way too high.
About the attitude and behaviour of service personnel, I think it is not too much to ask for some level of courteous behaviour at the very least. Moreover, even if you discount the service person, the people handling complaints(in this case it was more of a feedback really, to the company) have no excuse of any kind that you mentioned. They are sitting in offices using phones /mails etc.
