Nice review Fenil, as always.
However, I feel that RC-2 lacked the punch of RC-1 somehow. In RC-1, Ravi's actions were justified, and he didn't really kill anyone innocent. RC-2 somehow tended to show Ravi as a ''rakshas'' who killed people mercilessly to attain power, from the dialogs of Surya ...and Bhavani (Surya's wife).
Much of Surya's act of vengeance was driven by the fact of ''thinking'' of Ravi as a person who did bad to him which wasn't (probably) the case since the TV bomb case was kind of a mystery (and considering Ravi's character from part-1, it didn't look like he would have ordered the killing). Going to the extreme act of vengeance merely based on assuming something seemed a bit of stretch to me.
Also, the film should have some scene where Surya gets to know that it was his father who got Ravi's father killed. But none of these things were shown in the movies.. I feel much of the time was wasted in the slow-motion scenes which could have been used to show things in a different light and more justified manner. At the end, it just looked like a movie meant to showcase Suriya. :)Read More

Hi,
A from-the-heart review. :) I felt the movie was driven mainly by 3 things: the characters, the moments, and a medley of metaphors. The story wasn't really something the movie intended to hinge upon in the first place. IMO, the climax/ending could have been stronger for a better impact. But w...ho am I to suggest ROM how it should have been? :) He treated the climax how he felt was right. And I personally didn't see much problem with that. The bottomline is that the message was honest and clear.Read More

Hi Shalu,
Well written and well justified review. I agree that the climax/ending was a bit of a letdown. But I would rather be forgiving because of the other merits the movie has -- the characters, its moments, and nicely woven metaphors, interspersed in the story. It worked for me too. :)

Hi Shalu,
Your review is just like the movie. Sweet, simple, earthy, and unpretentious. :)
A complete and balanced review. Keep writing!

Fenil's Bollywood Talk # 35

Hi Fenil I see nothing wrong with the way you presented your perspectives. Moreover, your review was much more complete and more encompassing than from many of those who praised the film, and probably feel that they got the ''essence'' of the film whereas someone who didn't like the film, didn't get... it.
Besides, the things that make someone like a movie may be precisely the same ones that make someone else dislike it totally. And that's perfectly normal.
Keep writing. Don't take the brickbats too seriously. You still rock. :)

Hi Sonia,
Very well written. Loved the way you presented your perspective on the movie and it's good that you didn't take too long to write the review. Sometimes it's better to judge things (especially a piece of art, such as cinema) based on immediate instincts rather than much delayed afterthou...ghts and retrospections. :)
Anurag Kashyap is a brave filmmaker who I think doesn't believe in spoonfeeding the audience and instead lets them have their own interpretations of black vs white, or right vs wrong. Also. the reason why Dev D (and No Smoking) might not appeal to some audience is that such a kind of cinema is like an 'acquired taste', something many of us aren't used to, or haven't grown up on. But almost anyone would agree that the face of Hindi cinema is indeed changing now. Love it or hate it (I haven't seen the movie yet), Dev D another example of that change, and Anurag should definitely be credited for experimenting with such a genre, without worrying too much about the outcome.
Keep writing.

This is not done. A review shouldn't just be a synopsis of the *plot* of the movie as you have made it look like. And to make it even worse, you revealed the entire plot with ending as well.

Hi Fenil,
I haven't seen the movie yet so can't really say if I agree with your review or not. From the promos, the movie does seem technically brilliant (plus the music being a high point) as your review suggests. Of course, that alone doesn't make the movie good, if it flags in other department...s.
BTW, the movie is given an A certificate but, given the theme of the movie, your review is squeaky-clean with a U certificate (if there existed one for reviews on MS :)).
Nice review, as usual!
Cheers,

Hi Anurag,
I agree the movie ended with that 'incompleteness' feeling lingering in the audience's minds. But even though the movie may not have an audience-pleasing ending, it was still a brave effort from the director to tackle a difficult and unconventional theme, and Zoya did a commendable job... in my opinion. You may also read my review that I posted yesterday.

Hi Shalu,
Quite an honest account of the movie. Though I felt the movie wasn't that much about coming up with a 'hard-hitting' Madhur Bhandarkar type of drama. Instead, it was more about highlighting the layers and the little nuances of the characters involved. But I also agree that the slow pace... of the movie was a little downer. I just posted my review too.
Keep writing.

To me, one of the best parts of Luck By Chance was, surprisingly, when the opening credits roll. You witness a series of contrasting metaphors involving some junior-artists, such as a winged angel walking into a lousy film-studio washroom.
Two astronauts (with their costumes on) sitting in so...Read more

Hi Fenil,
Nice review. You can also read mine and I don't think I disagree with what you have written in yours.
BTW, for most people (over)analyzing the subtexts in the movie, and pointing out the so-called 'goof ups', I would suggest reading a scene-by-scene analysis (warning: it's a long one...), not by me but someone else. Read it here (preferably after having seen the movie): http://mitchellelling.blogspot.com/2009/01/slumdog-millionaire-scene-by-scene.html
Of course, it's just someone's interpretation of the movie, but I found it quite close to how I myself interpreted the movie. And if someone does view Slumdog from just a movie's perspective (without any biases), much of their question, gripes, and complaints will be addressed through this analysis.

Your review brings total justice to the movie! :) CC2C is indeed a colossal disappointment. The movie, with its overdose of absurdity, grossly insults the intelligence of audience.
