Mani Rathnam is considered a legendary film maker in the south. However Hindi cinema lovers were bowled over by the magic he created in Roja. Later, Bombay also came across as a masterpiece. However with the much hyped disaster-Dil Se his reputation as a ace film maker took a severe beating. He proved his point with the Tamil movies he made after Dil Se that he is still a master.
However Hindi film makers are eagerly awaiting his most ambitious project-Yuva.With a star cast of Ajay Devgan-Eesha Deol(who is the only artiste to work in the tamil version as well), Abhishek Bachchan-Rani Mukerjhee(earlier seen in Bas Itna Sa Khwaab hai) and Vivek Oberoi-Kareena Kapoor(who desperately need a hit).
The story of Yuva as shown from the promos and write ups is interesting.We just know that it is a story of 3 people-Ajay Devgan-a youth of today who is brilliant but has amazing leadership qualities and wants to change the society. Although he is offered a scholarship for a doctorate in Us he prefers to stay in India and do something which will change the society.
Vivek Oberoi who is a cool dude and educated person who wants to pursue his dreams without thinking about others and their problems. Lastly, Abhishek Bachchan who is on the wrong side of law.All 3 have their love interest as well. Then something connects all these 3 people.
Now what follows is a secret closely guarded by Mani Rathnam.
As I have not seen the movie I am making my assumptions.Who knows this assumption comes out to be true once we see the movie. I want u to rewind a bit and go 25 years back in 1979 when Yash Chopra's classic Kaala Pathar was released. It was a story of 3 men-Amitabh Bachchan-an expelled navy officer who joins the coal mines and is the saviour of workers. He hates himself for leaving the ship when it was drowning. He shares a special relationship with the coal mine doctor-Raakhee.
Raakhee works as a doctor to pursue her social goals.Thus this couple represents the section of people who wants to work for the society. Shashi Kapoor-an engineer by profession and a cool urban guy.He has a soft corner for Parveen Babi who is a modern urbane woman who is a journalist by profession, with a modern outlook.
Lastly, Shatrughan Sinha-a fugitive who runs away from the jail.He develops a relationship with Neetu Singh who is a poor girl who sells bangles to make a living. Circumstances bring all these 6 charcters
together in a coal mine and all represented the youth of India in the 70-s. Now according to me it is really co-incidental that all these 3 characters echo in Yuva.
In Kala Pathar a coal mine and a disaster where miners are struck connects all these 3 men. Will Yuva also have such a connection?The Burning Train was also disaster based but there is hardly any similarity. I have a gut feeling that although there is no coal mines in Yuva, theer will be something else probably a flood or any other disaster which will bring the charcters together. Did you people also relaised the similarity in characters of these 2 movies.
Kala Pathar written by Salim-Javed was an amazing film. It is the most dark film ever made by
Yash Chopra. Although it did not match the success of Deewar or Trishul it is still a classic by all standards. Here I have to say that Yuva already scores over Kaala Pathar over the music.While Kaala Pathar had a good track by Rajesh Roshan but the highlight of the track was the Shashi Kapoor's entry track'Ek Raasta..''. Yuva has almost all songs composed by mastero A.R.Rahman and are brilliant.
Well we will come to know about this after watching the movie only but I hope that the movie matches up the briiliance of Kaala Pathar. I hope that Yuva is not as dark as Kaala Pathar as now people wont watch such an intense movie. For that matter even then the movie did not create the ripples it should have.
Anyways I am giving the movie 4 stars hoping that it will be a great movie whether its based on Kala Pathar or not.
