Wake Up Call

The good news is that Ranbir Kapoor is not a pretender burdened by lineage but a full blown performer with stars stamped all over him. The bad news is that the movie per se will not create a stir or awaken the audience.

The screenplay was written as a slice of life movie with an urbane sensibility. Spoilt but lovable brat is suppose to meet this sensible middle class working girl who transforms him to a responsible adult. The premise was fine but somehow the director could not build a compelling story on it.

The humor is subdued and does not help the cause. There are too many loopholes in the screenplay, which sabotage its realistic cinema ambitions. How can a middle class girl rent her own apartment and furnish it even before she gets a job in a city like Mumbai? She does not bat an eyelid before allowing her so called best friend Sid to stay with her in her one room existence. Within a month both of them get their big breaks in their workplace and life is beautiful. In the meanwhile washing innumerable dishes and clothes together the lead pair finally realizes their feelings for each other. They however wait patiently for the much hyped romantic Mumbai monsoon to hit the stands before their emotional floodgates are opened. Wake up Ayan and smell the koffee …….

Ranbir as Sid epitomize the ipod generation. His expressions, body language and dialogue delivery is pitch perfect and makes you wonder whether he is really acting or playing himself. Just watch how he holds the camera and carries his laptop rucksack in the movie and you will know what I am talking about. Konkona is good but looking older than Ranbir. The production team tried heir best to make her look alluring and earthy but all said and done let us accept that casting her against Ranbir was not a good idea. Prachi Desai or Chitrangadha Singh would have been a better bet.

Characters around the main couple are created with lot of nuances and details. But the sad thing is that their presence is fleeting and does not really take the story forward. Laksmi, the plump female buddy of Sid is a great character and frankly deserve a movie of her own. The other buddy Rishi and his girlfriend completes the “friends” catalogue. Supriya Pathak and Anupam Kher as the parents excel in their scenes. The confrontation scene between Sid and his parents after he fails is top rate. Kashmira Shah as the hot neighbor might be a casting coup but does not add value. Rahul Khanna as the uber cool editor seem to be on deputation from from chick flicks.

Music by the SEL trio as always is good. The title track by Shankar Mahadevan is energetic and reminds you of your college days. Another good number is the “Iktara” song composed by Amit Trivedi. The background score also goes well with the overall mood of the movie. The video of the remixed version of the title track in the end has top notch visuals with the infectious Ranbir prancing around with glee. Expectations from the movie was quite high so it will disappoint quite a few. Btw really enjoyed the trailor of Qurban before the movie. Hope that one lives up to its promise. As they say we live to see another movie another day.
