We all like to step into someone else’s shoes and look at the world from a periscope and revel at how beautiful things are out there, we all are troubled and traumatized some time or the other, in some form or the other and we want to give a vent to our feelings.

We want to relax and relive a life which is not ours, albeit for whatever small periods it is possible and what better way to conjure dreams then to go watch a movie. Now the purist would say what is a movie after all for it’s just a sequence of photographs projected onto a screen with sufficient rapidity as to create the illusion of motion and continuity, well then that’s the technical side of it.

The other side of it is the idea of pure cinematic magic, a phantasmagoric illusion that transports us into an all-together different world. For those 180 odd minutes of reel life we become someone else that rejoice with the joys of the hero and are saddened with his sorrows, his gambols light up our hearts and his troubles become our problems. Reel life becomes real life for all of us and the three hours of motion picture acts as a common thread that ties us all together into one communion in a world which is far removed from our daily lives.

Well that’s the magic of cinema and today I am going to talk about some of those rare gems that have made movie watching such a fun thing. Lets play a little hide and seek here with me giving you hints and you trying to guess them out, believe me you it is easier then writing a is a.

salim anarkali ke bemisal pyaar ki azeem sahakaar, Bollywood’s tryst with colored cinema, Naushad’s musical melodies, K Asif’s direction and epic performances by Dilip Kumar and the darling of the masses Madhubala, well need I say more about this saga of love, courage, heroism and grandeur. taarikh gawahi dega jill-e-ilahi, ek kaneej ke aage Hindustan ke badshah ka sar jhuk gaya

There is no jewel that this thief cant steal, that’s the punch line of this one. Evergreen Dev sahib comes together with good old Dada muni to enact one of the best-edited and directed suspense dramas of Indian cinema. A gripping story, amazing song sequences and some magical cine moments makes for a classic. I am not going to let out more on this one, should be easy to guess.

An established star and a rising star, a once in a lifetime story teller and a wonderful script, this one had all the ingredients of a classic. Story revolves around a no nonsense doctor treating a patient suffering from lympho circoma of the intestine who is ever so full of life. yeh duniya ek rangmanch hai aur hum sub is rangmanch ki kathputliya hai jinki dor upar wale ke haath me hai jahapanah

Kitne Aadmi the, well that one dialog is more than enough hint to guess the name of this one based on Akiro Kurosawa’s The Magnificent Seven, the remake of which is being planned by Ramu of Factory fame. Every frame a masterpiece in itself probably one of the finest movies ever made in the history of Indian cinema.

An angry young man trying to break free from the clutches of the avaricious world, an honest police officer who sees nothing in front of his duty and one dialog that made screen history and a movie legend, bhai tum sign karte ho ya nahi!! well need I say more??

Ram Prasad gaya to Laxman Prasad aaya, has a mustachioed Ram, the well mannered apple of his boss’s eye and the shaved Laxman, a rogue who gets on Utpal Dutt’s nerves every time he sees him, an out and out laugh riot punctuated with awesome comic timing and some real down to earth middle class roots for this one, fetched Amol Palekar his first Filmfare award and well who can forget this one mere pitaji kaha karte the ki wastra admi ki ijjat dhakne ki lie hoti hai aur agar har Hindustani apne kapde ki lambai ek inch ghata le to sare desh ki ijjat dhaki jaa sakti hai., another gem from the stable of the legendary Hrishida.

A doting sali sahiba who cant see anyone come close to matching her srimaan jijaji,  a botany professor Parimal out to prove to his wife that even the great jijaji can be fooled and helping him in his exploits is the English professor Sukumar Babu, what ensues then is poor cinema delight with some superb comedy and amazing dialogs, all in all total gold. ** sahib hum wetan to poora hi lenge, aap yeh paanch rupai rakh lijie.

14 songs 2 weddings and a funeral sums up this family melodrama starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit. A homely movie so to say, that brought back the good old days of people queuing up at theaters to watch movies. This one was a remake of the bhojpuri hit Nadiya Ke Paar.

There is someone somewhere made for you , so goes the oft repeated timeless love quote. Dream weaver Yashraj films comes up with yet another musical romantic shot in the ravishingly beautiful Switzerland and desh ki khosboo spreading Punjab. Timeless music from Jatin Lalit peppered with heavy doses of Indian ethics and family values, inspired performance by the K.k.k.k Kiran fame SRK and Kajol, cameos by Anupam Kher et al well now that’s the recipe of a golden classic, isn’t it? bade bade deshon mein aisi choti choti baatien hoti rehti hai senorita

A whimsical English bureaucrat and a self respecting Indian farmer well that sounds clichéd, lets jazz it a little, they play a game of cricket to decide the tax the farmer would pay to the Queen’s coffer’s. A doting belle and a besotted English lady trying to woo the bhola bhala gaav ka kisaan and some lilting music by AR Rehman fetched the movie a nomination to the best foreign film category at the Oscars.

The movies have been not been listed in any order of preference, also it doesn’t mean that these are the only ones that I like, there are many many more but then I could not list all of them for the title does not allow the same.

Till we meet again, keep cinegoing and enjoying, for movies music and loads of fun, that’s the essence of life.
