When I think of Coke, I think of my childhood and the indefinite supply of this product that our family enjoyed.
Well, you got it - Grandpa worked there! My father and his father were CN Railway men - drove the trucks for the CN Express. My mother's father worked for Coca-Cola.
These are the things that I remember;
1) Cases of coke arriving at our door; one of our first soft drinks;
2) Little trucks with tiny coke bottles (they are collectors' items now). I used to play with them and pretend I had a milk-route in the back yard of our home in the east end of Toronto. My red tricycle with matching trailer was the milk-wagon. The tiny coke bottles, in their little cases was the milk delivery;
3) Another memory of Coca-Cola is the many calendars we saw everywhere, with the pictures of wholesome, bright, clean-faced girls holding up a bottle of the good stuff. There were big tin signs that advertised it all over the city and throughout the country-side. When my father built his garage, Grampa was able to bring some of those signs home from work. My Dad used them to cover the garage and then painted over them.
When the garage caught fire one night when I was about four, a lot was burned - the Hudson Terra-Plane was a write-off, and the inner walls of the garage - but it stood intact - why? The tin signs, of course.
The pear tree was burned too, but the next season that pear tree produced its best crop! Well, it was everybody's guess that the fire destroyed the bugs that were inhibiting its growth.
4) When I was around 9, we got a television set - black and white, of course; Saturday afternoons, we watched the Big Top Circus. My mother always got hot dogs and ice-cream in for the event; the beverage, of course, was Coke!
5) My preference? Well, if I have to choose between Coke or Pepsi, it depends on how I am physically.
a) When I have indigestion and need a darn good burp, I choose Coke - it does it every time;
b) When I just want a 'light' cola, I get Pepsi.
Actually, if it is available, I choose Brio. But that calls for another review, doesn't it?
My friends call me Carly - hope you'll do the same :-)
