I've  actually bounced back from the malaise, fatigue and monotony of everyday life after a week well spent at this little piece of heaven on earth.  A week, you may ask, quite incredulously.a  full seven days in back - of - beyond Almora? With no TV, no internet, no shopping.and yes...Read more

Well I am an ex AFMC - ite, and a die-hard fan of all things AFMC. My batch, S, celebrated its silver jubilee Dec 2005, and the few days we spent there kindled vivid memories of those wonderful years spent in Pune many moons ago. I wonder how many of you have heard of this quaint little hamlet in Himachal, nestling as it does at a height of appx 7400 feet asl, 80 odd kms from Simla? A winding mountain road takes you there from Narkanda in less than an hour, through lush green mountains densely populated by conifers, with...Read more

Hi there Shilpy, Both my hubby and I spent the best years of our lives in Pune studying medicine. That was a long time ago, but we are still extremely fond of the place and keep going back for old times sake. Wd have loved to settle there, but there were really no jobs available, and those t...hat were paid really poorly. :( We still haven't got used to Delhi..and despite being vastly different from what it was 2 decades ago, Pune tops our list of eminently liveable cities. Envy you! ReneeRead More

I intentionally did not, since I did not want to get personal about any one establishment. All addresses and other info is available in travel guides.. Outlook Traveller, for instance. R.

There are several privately run guesthouses and bungalows on offer in the hills these days. No doubt many be a real fun experience, especially because many of these are offbeat and one can truly commune with nature. However I would suggest one checks out a few things for oneself before planni...Read more

I really wonder if all this really has any effect on those who manage the affairs of the company. At least potential and existing customers may well be warned of what to expect ..going through the reviews on this site. Let me also add that I finally heard from a customer care exec informing me th...at I had actually been overbilled..only after I adversely reviewed them. Nothing else seems to have mattered to date. I was told I could expect a correction in the next billing cycle.. am still waiting to see what happens!!Read More

We've tried several times to move out west.. for the very same reasons as yours'.. to be able to afford our kids a better quality of life than ever possible here. Things here don't seem to be getting any better..and the future for our kids looks bleaker by the day. However as doctors immigration... to a western country is hugely difficult, if not impossible. It is perhaps much easier if one gives all the requisite exams soon after one's preliminary studies etc are done. Postgrad / residency has to be repeated in most western nations before one can settle down into a decent job. This is variable but extends from 2 - 4 years at the very least. Clearing the USMLE ( that allows you to get into a residency program in the US), for instance, at this age, with family and home and work is pretty daunting..and certainly not for the weak hearted!! UK is in dire need of docs but there is an immense amount of paper work required, right from transcripts to testimonials from one's teachers.. many of whom one has lost complete track of. Plus they have a host of completely rigid , non flexible rules..almost as though there is an invisible barrier preventing you from taking up advertised jobs. I recently accessed the Canadian High Commission's site for an online assessment ( and incidentally discovered your review today!) and found I fit the bill for a skilled worker with a not - too - great score of 77. I am very hesitant to put in all the money required, even for an expert assessment, since I know doctors are very low on the employment scale. A doctor colleague of mine was recently told she could be sent across to Canada as a medical sonographer (read technician), where she could work for sometime, clear the requisite exams, complete a residency and then look for a job. The whole idea of that long an incubation for both of us is more than just daunting. Then you tell yourself..let the kids make a mark for themselves and move out.. we will of course notRead More

Hi Sandeep! After a lot of searching and experimenting with off beat places to holiday in (some of which have been major disappointments), we finally found THE place that we were looking for!! In fact we've been thinking of trying to organise a short free medical camp for the local population ...there on our next long visit There is a real dearth of medical care in the region despite efforts by various NGOs. Our 10 year old had a bad fall from one of the ponies there this summer(despite being a rider herself). The young fella just decided to zip off with her!! So pony rides..wherever.. are out. I agree completely that the personal touch at the Lake Resort makes all the difference!! Ciao Renee Read More
