What's in a Name?

By: desiprincess | Posted Sep 20, 2011 | Just Life! | 770 Views | (Updated Sep 20, 2011 05:18 AM)

It really fascinates me how we come across so many different people in our lives. We meet people at work, school, place of worship, party or some other common organization. Even if we turn the corner, we come across strangers who become friends and share a special bond later down the line.

But how do we remember each individual that comes in and out of our lives? Well a name is always attached to a face.

But why are names given when a baby is born? Is it because this will help people to differentiate one person from another? Is it used for identification purposes? Is it a symbol of something meaningful and special? Or is it simply because it is a reason someone will respond and be answered to? Maybe it is a polite way of addressing someone instead of saying "Hey you!" or pointing.

How does one decide on a name? I sometimes wonder if a name is decided upon because the newborn is being named after a relative or famous celebrity. Perhaps the name is given after a religious deity or figure. The name may be given because it is easy to pronounce in certain countries or has an appropriate meaning behind it.

Who decides on the name? Do the parents decide? Grandparents? Aunts or uncles? Siblings or friends? Does the original name turn into a nickname coined by family, friends, or classmates? The list is neverending.

Personal Meaning: My parents named me Sheila because it was both an Indian and an American name. People in both India and America can easily pronounce it. The spelling however is different. In India, it is spelled Sheela whereas in America, it is spelled Sheila. Sheila also means noble, loyal, and having a strong character. In addition, Sheila is a term for lady in Australia.

My name has been used in several English songs and the ever popular hit, Sheila Ki Jawani from the movie, Tees Maar Khan.
