Bengalis as a race has always been used to violence. Bengal has been the birth place of violent freedom struggle, the Naxalite movement, communal riots, ‘gram dokhol’ business in Midnapores and many more violent episodes.
Now, we in Bengal, have seen so much violence and heard so much of detestable self-serving arguments from both sides of the political divide that we hardly lose our sleep over incidents like political violence or rape. We accept them as the destiny and move on. Mere lack of governance does not enrage us. Why only rapes? College principals being beaten up day in and day out, police officer getting shot dead by the political goons in full view of TV cameras, student protester getting killed in police custody, molestation, and physical violence against women is rampant.
The politicians care only about votes and the money minting racquets. And after almost every incident the ruling politicians say the incident was “minor” or it was “concocted”. Now in Bengal, you just can’t get raped. You can only pretend to have been raped, and obviously as an opponent political worker or a Maoist make up a case to malign the government. You may even get killed but can’t get raped!
People have nowhere to go, except for places like Bengaluru or Pune for the privileged few and construction sites in Kerala or Maharashtra for the underprivileged
