Serious about the Saree...need Honest Advice!

Dear Fellow MSians,

Right now I feel about 2 cm tall. I need some honest feedback :-) from those in the know about saree wearing. I really love to wear my saree, but I just got some scathing criticism from a friend (who is an Indian guy) saying that non-Indians should NOT wear the saree, that it looks stupid and is really just taken by Indians as a child doing something stupid.

I'm crushed. And, I don't want to be culturally insensitive. My friend told me that there are many different styles of wrapping the saree and that unless you "did it right" it looked really horrible. I only know one style--I was taught it in the store.

I love the beautiful sweep of the fabric, the comfort of the long skirt, and the drop-dead gorgeousness of the long lines of the saree. But maybe I am just a toad in a cloth to Hindustani eyes, when I think I am looking good.

For what it is worth, when I wore my saree today, several Indian people on the street did compliment me -- perhaps out of pity or kindness now I don't know.

You can sort of see how I was wearing my saree in my picture. The pallu was pulled down over my shoulder to show the fabric pattern. Perhaps that was wrong. Basically, it was wrapped once around, pleated, wrapped around the chest and over my left shoulder.

So, please, let me know more about the customs and styles of saree wearing and your opinions on non-Indians wearing them. Honesty from friends is preferable to mockery from strangers.
