Love is a Great Healer

Love is a great healer and it not only helps in healing the person who is loved but also fills the giver with joy and fulfillment.

“Imagine a situation where you are lost in a desert. The sun is scorching over your head. The water in your bag has been exhausted. Your throat has dried out. You cannot see any sign of life for miles beyond view. You feel weak and faint. Finally you can take no more. You just collapse on the sand and wish God could help you. Then you feel a touch on your shoulder. You see a kind face with a smile. He is a merchant who has been following you from behind. You see a bottle of water in his hand. He readily offers it to you and asks you to hop on to his camel and takes you to the nearest sign of human habitation. What would your feelings be for this kind stranger? Would you not be extremely grateful and bless him.”

The above imaginary situation was only to show you how a man feels when he is in desperate need for help and support. Dear friends, I have seen practically in my life how love can heal and cure sickness of people. I have seen people dying on the streets recover and smile again in the destitute homes run by Mother Teresa Sisters.

On a more personal level, I have shared you with you in my previous diary, how my wife had been affected with cancer in the year 2007 and how as a family we had been coping the situation with faith and courage. The moment I learnt about her health problem, I decided that if there is one thing that would not be found lacking in future for her, it would be my love and care. I donned the role of not only a supporting life partner but also of a mother and a nurse and took care of her like a child especially in the moments of chemotherapy treatment. It is one of the most excruciating and barbaric methods of treatment in allopathic medicine where a person loses complete hair and becomes terribly weak and anemic. The only thing that would keep the patient going during this treatment would be a purpose to live and a will to fight. During one of those moments I remember my wife saying to me “when I see your love for me it makes me want to live”. Those words will always ring in my ears. I believe that apart from God’s blessing, the medical treatment and the support of well wishers, it was also my love and care which helped in the curative process.

Dear friends, in your family or known circles if you have any elderly or infirm person, a physically or mentally challenged person, a person suffering from any major illness, believe me, every kind word you say to them, every moment of quality time you spend with them, will not only help them to cope better but also will touch you and make you more happier and peaceful. I can tell you this from experience. Take some pain, make some effort and sacrifice and set aside some quality time for such people and glow the lamp of love and hope in their lives.

I end this message with some quotes of Mother Teresa:

If you want a love message to be heard, it has got to be sent out. To keep a lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.

Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty

Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action.

Love begins by taking care of the closest ones - the ones at home.

One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody.

We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop
