India is home to the world’s largest number of modern-day slaves, estimated at between 13.3 and 14.7 million, according to the first index of global slavery compiled by the Perth-based Walk Free Foundation. India is among 10 nations that together account for the highest numbers of enslaved people—a massive 76% of the worldwide total of 29.8 million people estimated to be in slavery.

The first edition of Global Slavery Index ranks 162 countries, based on three factors: estimated prevalence of modern slavery by population, a measure of child marriage, and a measure of humans trafficked in and out of a country.

The study suggests that while slavery involves the exploitation of some foreign nationals, by far the largest proportion is made up of Indians citizens within India, particularly in the form of debt bondage and bonded labour.
