A 22-year-old dengue patient in the ICU ward of Apollo Hospital, Gandhinagar, was raped by an in-house doctor and sweeper around midnight on Sunday. Traumatised by the incident, Shamita(name changed) - who was too weak to react - chose not to disclose it to her family members for two days, while she kept crying and pleading them to get her out of the hospital.
The family did not realise the gravity of situation and blamed it on the prolonged treatments, until they learnt about the incident when she scribbled on a piece of paper that she was raped by an on-duty doctor, Tuesday. As Shamita was rushed to the ICU with a low platelet count on Friday, the hospital staff thought in a state of delirium, she must have felt violated due to a routine check. To their worst nightmares, Shamita's allegations of rape were confirmed by a preliminary report of medical examination conducted by Gandhinagar Civil Hospital, Thursday.
It was during interrogation that the accused doctor confessed to his crime, said an investing official at Adalaj Police Station, as per Times of India report.
Apollo Hospital suspended Dr. Chauhan and the sweeper who were arrested, Wednesday night, following a police interrogation at the hospital.
