Fourth Law : Untold

Chapter 1

September 26th 2027 Trivandrum: 7.am

“Hey, look here John, See this surprise?”

Ann called from the lobby next to the balcony. She was standing on her weighing machine, bubbling with joy! Of late she had been trying to lose weight, by every perceivable means, but in vain. She would lose a kilo in a couple of months only to add up two in another week! She could not say no to her favorite foods. Obviously! What else do (some) men live for?

Chilly breeze was sneaking into the room through the open doors and the smell of the virgin morning was deliciously fragrant. The sun was yet to brighten up, and the yellow streaks of rays were busy painting and then erasing wild pictures on the inner walls like a kid craving perfection!

Their apartment was near the sea, the most prestigious one in the vicinity. John and Ann had put in all their savings for it.

John was having his shave! Hearing her yell he cut his cheek with the razor!

“Oww…Damn it!” What the heck was it?” He applied alum on the wound and picked up the towel wrapped around him and went to her. Ann was in her bikini, looking as sportive as ever. “Look, Look at this? I have lost Tenkilos? See… see...” She was panting but all smiles!

Yes, the machine was reading 60 Kgs. Wonderful, but was she actually looking slimmer? Doubtful! But machines cannot go wrong! John looked at it again, well, something wrong somewhere?

“Feeling little green dear? Well, a fact is a fact, you should agree, now I shall try those jeans which I purchased for two thousand bucks, my fav!” Ann pranced her way to the wardrobe!

She had invariably noticed those furtive glances John would pass when he spots some slim, beautiful girl on the streets or at the party. Ann could not just stand that , but never dared to tell him, as she felt a bit sad about her figure, especially those extra pounds round her hips. She invariably noticed his recent splurge on cosmetics which made her suspect of his intentions.

They say when a man starts taking more time to get dressed, well, he is sure after another woman!. And women, when they show more concern for the man, unmistakably it could be a hidden affair as they feel more guilty than a man while walking through the deviated path!

“I just cannot believe it?” John was still not convinced. Forget it! He returned to the loo to finish off the morning rituals!

Kazhakkuttam: the same day: 7.30am

Rudy was riding her bicycle round the garden pathway. She enjoyed a bit of cycling in the morn as that was her usual exercise time. Cycling for about an hour she would collect the milk packets from the booth and return home sweating. She was humming the latest rock, while pedaling synchronously. Rudy was a student of class XII, a very sprightly soul, and loved by her friends for her sociable ,and amicable disposition.

The cool breeze in the morning and the invisible flutter of the humming bird yonder in the garden envigoured her mind while she thanked Mother Nature for its bounty.

Uhh! , has this cycle gone berserk? All of a sudden she found the cycle increase its speed as it moved faster and faster than at the pace at which she had been pedaling! It was as if she was moving on grease! She applied the brakes and the bike stopped reluctantly after skidding for a couple of meters.

Everything was looking the same as ever? The trees, the sky, the plain dirt down there, everything? Then what happened? Rudy stopped cycling for the day and pushed the bike back home as she was not sure about the machine.. The hub of the wheel might have gone free from the chain drive or may be the free wheel giving trouble? She was not sure! Let me consult the mechanic!.

The sun was obscured by the dark clouds and its feeble rays tried to sneak out through the narrow ridges drawing a rosette round the horizon as if forewarning the whole world of an impending catastrophe!.
