A viral message is being distributed on WhatsApp tricking users to download the'WhatsApp Gold' version, which was until now used by'big celebrities' and includes some new features like video calling, ability to send 100 images at once, free calling, ability to change WhatsApp themes and more. Do not get tricked by the message, in reality it's a malware that'll infect the smartphones. Your data might be at risk.
The message also says that the'WhatsApp Gold' is invitation-only and only those who receive a message would be able to download the exclusive version. The app is not available on Apple App store or Google Play store.
The invitation link given inside the message - https://goldenversion.com - goes to an error 404 page. Number of people affected by the scam is not known. However, a report states that Android users have been targeted more than iOS users.
WhatsApp has acknowledged this scam and has requested users to be careful and immediately report the message as well as the sender. Users have also been asked to block sender, disregard and delete the message.
The company also says that it would never ask its users to upgrade or download another app, over text messages but over official point of contact like emails. it is advisable to not click on the link provided in the message.
This new scam bears resemblance to the previous'WhatsApp Plus' scam.
