There are certain qualities inculcated in us by our elders while we are growing. These qualities include moral, social and economic. Moral comprising basics like respecting elders, speaking the truth & so on… Social based on socializing like greeting elders, friends wherever you meet them. Economic includes kids learning how to balance their needs and wants when they deal with money.

When I was around 10 years old I never understood what Money is all about. My dad used to fetch me from school and always asked me if there is anything I am in need of. This included the home work stuff I need like maps, charts, pencils, pen and buying a chocolate bar was mandatory. At times all I needed was just the toffee. One day on expressing my desire for chocolate my dad gave me 100 bucks and he expected me to return the change, I went to the shop while he waited on his scooter. I happily spent the whole amount buying good for nothing stuff like a pencil box, color pencils and everything I could to make the total 100. I went with the big pack and my dad who expected the change was dazed. He checked the stuff I bought and asked me to return everything faltu and get the change back. I felt quite embarrassed and hated my dad for this, it was shameful for me to return it to the dukaanwala uncle but I had no option I did as my dad had asked me to. From this particular day I avoided asking my dad anything even the stuff I needed for my homework. I was quite careful before buying anything I am in need of and this developed economic sensibility in me. This particular incident has changed the way I think and has helped me later in life.

When my nephew (9 years old) gets everything even before he asks for visited me I thought it’s my moral responsibility to ask him what he thinks about money.

I asked him

Q1: “what according to you is money?

Money?%%$^^?” “it’s used to buy everything

Q2: “What do you think money can’t buy?

He replied: “The stuff that comes free with the things I buy from money!”

I couldn’t stop laughing and my moral science class stopped then and there.

God save us from teaching morals to the kids of this generation. They leave us speechless and yeah you know it well that I m already confused! ; )

PS: You can see my nephew in the snap above.
