Bonding With Ruskin Bond

I have always enjoyed reading books by Ruskin Bond or lets say RB for short. Rusty as he is fondly known, has written numerous short stories, novellas, essays and stories especially for children and they are all a delight to read. His style of writing is distinctive, lucid, and at the same time makes for a captivating reading. Born in 1934, in Kasauli, he is an Indian author of British descent and has adopted Mussoorie as his place of residence. Naturally, he is fascinated by the mountains and has brought the flora and fauna and all of the mountain air into his books, which makes them special. As you turn the pages you are struck by the simplicity of characterisation and use of language, that is devoid of complexities. He has also written poems and has earned the epithet of, Indian William Wordsworth. In his books, he has brought to life the simple pleasures of living, removed from all the humdrum and the daily grind associated with urban way of living. For example, he says, happiness is as exclusive as a butterfly and you must not pursue it. Savor the moments of happiness as they maybe shortlived and may not come in your way very often. So stay very still and enjoy the moment. His achievements include, the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957, for his very first novel, The Room on the Roof, Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. He maybe a sensitive person or an introvert but he remains an eternal optimist inspite of all his 89 years. Essentially, through his books you reconnect with nature, the mountains, specifically the Upper reaches of Garhwal, the simple hill folk and the daily happenings in the hills. Currently I am reading, All Roads Lead To Ganga, which transports you variously to the natural biosphere, the enchanting birdlife, the ancient shrines and pilgrimages, and describes vividly the glory of the sacred river Ganga, as he waxes lyrical about the confluence of the Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi. So what are you waiting for readers? Grab a book by RB and experience for yourself the pleasurable, magical read of his works.
