Good review. I generally use clear lip gloss instead, because in general lipstick looks terribly..I don't know..incongruous? out of place? on most Indian women. There are exceptions though, I guess.

This movie is better than the vast majority of Hindi movies churned out each year, and you should definitely go see it. That?s a fact. Having read Amrita Pritam?s book myself, however, I couldn?t help but see a bunch of little irritating changes that the director seems to have made for absolutel...Read more

I thought it was a great review, and I agree with you--Nutan definitely looked better without makeup. The only makeup I ever wear is eyeliner, so I don't know that much about it. LOL, I don't think smiling ALWAYS makes people look better. Some people look better when they're not smiling.

but I didn't really like the movie that much. I agree with what you said about stereotypes and all that. Pinky was an especially realistic and well-drawn character--I think we all know someone like her. LOL, maybe Kareena Kapoor shuld have played Pinky.

..it has the johar trademark, but as you pointed out how many johar-chopra movies will have a fat ugly heroine over the age of 30?

I don't think a friendship between a guy and a girl is really plausible in India. Most ABCD's are nagged by their parents and not allowed to have a really close relationship with guys(especially if they're not Indian) , so I don't see that happening in our country of origin. LOL I wonder how Bol...lywood would gloss over Meg Ryan's live-in relationship and Crystal's divorce.Read More

Nora Ephron is famous for bringing back the old-fashioned romance kind of movie back into Hollywood. You might also want to see You've Got Mail (also directed by Ephron), with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.

Nice review..I have no clue who Mogambo is but I've always been a Balraj Sahni fan. Sadma is good too.

You certainly had the time or inclination to make incorrect assumptions about the way 'the Wicked source-of- all-Evil West' treats old people (ever heard of 80-year-old Ronald Reagan? ever heard of the commandment in the Bible 'Honor thy mother and thy father'?). What I said came from my own exper...ience. I live in India every summer with older relatives. I will give you the benefit of doubt and assume that you have actually lived in America (and weren't just relying on some retarded movie like Pardes), so I'm giving you an HR. BTW Bhishma was the exception not the rule. How many old people possess divine weapons and have a river for a mother? Read More

I know more than a few girls like Farrah who are westernized but pray too. All of them ARE Muslim though, so I guess the director was on to something. Muslims do tend to be more religious even if they are second or third generation. And yes we do need to laugh at ourselves. Some of the behavior s...hown, like Indian grocery store owners cheating/the fact that some people piss outside/Indian parents dropping on their daughter unannounced, are dead on accurate. I have seen this with my own eyes so you can't tell me it's a lie! This movie made fun of Indians but it also made fun of white girls and ABCd's. So it was an equal opportunity offender. And yes in some cases this movie was grossly inaccurate. But it was kind of funny.Read More

hated Purva Beid's role, and now that I think about it I hate the movie in spite of the fact that it was so funny. People can't think of a plot so they decide to milk the whole culturally-confused stereotype. This movie was grossly inaccurate.

Well, since you are critiquing Western culture I think one problem with Indian culture is that when someone becomes old they are immediately assumed to be weak, sick, and unable to do anything. Often, completely healthy older people are treated like handicapped mentally challenged people. Don't tre...at them like children and hide things from them because 'they can't handle it'. They are adults and deserve to know . Also don't assume that taking them outside is bad for their health. Leaving them at home all the time is probably worse for them. They should be encouraged to go out and to continue doing what they have always done. If they are happy going to work then don't force them to stay home and retire just because they are 'old'. If you treat someone like an old invalid, chances are they will age very rapidly and turn in to one. Read More

Madhuri and Hema Malini are THE most gorgeous Indian actresses ever. I think Madhubala, though she supposedly looks like Madhuri, was a little on the chubby side. And very ordinary looking compared to her contemporaries like Geeta Bali and Bina Rai.

I know a person who tells me, when I don't wash my hands after coming home, to stop bringing Muslim 'sanskaar' into our house, and also that Muslim people are dirty because they eat pork(?!?!?). Talk about ignorance. So I don't think characters like Mrs.Iyyer are exactly an anachronism or a figm...ent of the director's imagination. There is still a lot of ignorance and sterotypes about Muslims and Islam. South India is one of the more 'conservative' areas of India, and besides, she is a housewife. Mrs.Iyyer would have been even more unlikely if she had been a city girl from Bombay. I do agree with you about the ending though.Read More

I actually thought the movie was pretty funny. It wasn't the best ever but it wasn't that pathetic. Especially when compared to a comedy like American Pie. BTW in the movie Shaun was smart to begin with, he didn't suddenly get straight A's because of that book. Good review.

I read Little Men but for some reason I didn't like The Little Women characters in Little Men. It seemed like they had changed too much.
