The main turning point was the light but strong graphite rackets that was introduced just around beckers time in early 80s and the sophisticated pro-rackets today are as light as table tennis .This introduced the power game.With the old heavy racket of our dad's era (wooden and some other alloy late...r)in pre-Becker era (McEnroe,Connors, Lendl,etc) it was impossible to get that raw savage speed and skill was important.Next change is the introduction of synthetic courts and modifying the grass surface are other steps in direction of power play(US open and in many ATP circuits ).Even today in traditional clay courts of French open,you see long rallys and no one can pound aces consistently at XXX kmph.Hence usually French open comes up with some new upset winners(Moya,Kuertin,Sergi Bruguera,Gomez etc who never succeded on other surfaces) and big servers without skill bite the dust.Graf was the only one who had the grace,style and power play blended perfectly,and Goran was the best .Good review, agree that to rekindle the interest ,Williams needs some worthy opponents and in men's circuit someone who is consistent in winning grand slams .Read More
