Firstly, I admit that ?Yuva? is not less than a masterpiece from the Master Maniratnam considering bollywood standards and not mani's standards. Surely a classic entertainer and worth a watch even though it doesn?t have any emotional elements like typical Mani?s movies.

These days story has nothing to do with the success of the movie it is the screenplay that matters a lot. If you think of the story of his previous movie ?Alaipayuthey / Saathiya? it is so simple and you can tell it in a single line but it is the entire screenplay, which made the difference. And here Maniratnam makes his next step on a different screenplay. Though it is an inspired one it is quite a bold attempt.

The movie has three sub plots which is woven together as a single plot later. The story is nothing new. Among the three protagonists one is about a gunda and his wife who wants to earn money through any means never mind good or bad. Second plot is about an educated young man who wants to create revolution in politics.

The third plot in which all the youth can relate and it is a simple 3-day love story between a guy who aspires to go to USA shortly and a girl who is going to get married in few days. These subplots are used to build the characters and the final part is the continuation of the three-subplot together. It is a usual story that anyone can think of but the way it is dealt on screen is extremely different.

Even the screenplay within the subplots is good. No subplot seems boring to me and the final episode picks up high speed. No one can show lovers more intimate and better than Mani, viewers will get jealous on the lead pairs and their love. In this movie also he has dealt with three different love patterns the rustic love between Abishek and Rani, more matured and natural love between Ajay and Esha, immature and teenage funny love in two days between Vivek and Kareena.

It is difficult to handle three love stories in three subplots in a single movie and yet hold the interest of the viewers. But Mani has done it with perfection and his unique elegance. And also the screenplay is never confusing as much as recent Classic ?Virumandi? which also had such screenplay. The story is clearly narrated with a complex but yet understandable screenplay. I don?t know whether all masses can feel the same about the screenplay. The screenplay runs in a top gear in the final episode and I could not feel anything jarring except the love between Esha and Ajay. Esha is not at all required. And the screenplay would have been tighter without the love scenes between them. Screenplay makes it the movie of generation next.

Technical Master Piece

Cinematography by Ravi K.Chandran is top notch. Kolkata has never been so beautiful before. He has captured with three different colour patterns according to the shades of the three protagonists. ?Kudha hafiz? song is a visual treat. His camera angles plays an important role in the scene in which the three characters meet on the bridge as it is shown from different view points each time. A tough competition exists for this year?s Best cinematography award between him and Santosh Sivan for ?Meenaxi?.

Editing by six-time national award winner Sreekar prasad makes it a fast entertainer but slightly drags in the final episode, he could have made tighter.

Sound design by A.S.Lakshminarayanan (got national award for Best audiography in Mani?s ?Kannathil Muthamittal?). The movie is recorded with synch sound, the synch sound recording is with international standards and the sounds recreate the ambience of the scenes in the theatres.

Art direction by Sabucyril is subtle and does what is necessary and his sets are more close to reality to an extent that you never notice his work while watching the movie and there lies the success of his work.

Vikram Dharma?s stunts sequences are spicy and add fire to the screenplay. Especially the last fight on the bridge is the highlight of the movie and it is further enhanced by graphics, camera and editing techniques.

Background score is haunting. A great score again by A.R.Rahman. His songs are well used in the movie except ?Baadal? which I think is unnecessary in the movie, but all other songs fits well within the screenplay. A.R.Rahman is definitely a plus for the movie.

All these masters in each technical field when meets in a bridge called ?Mainratnam? they deliver a movie which will be known as ?Technically Generation next of Indian Cinema?.

Direction ? Maniratnam

As usual direction is top notch. He has extracted the best from the entire cast and crew. Though it may not be the best of his direction it has its own moments where his direction skills sparks the screen. They are emotional and steamy scenes between Abishek and Rani, scene in which Vivek and Kareena part in railway station and conversations between Om puri and Ajay devgan are all brilliantly executed scenes. Dialogues are sharp and to the point in all the scenes.

He has extracted a natural performance from all the lead and supporting characters.

Abishek is a surprise package of the movie. He glitters in a rustic role. Equally well performed is Rani as his pair and her unique voice is a plus. Ajay devgan?s age is hidden by his well shaved face and his costumes and but as usual he gives the best of him as a responsible revolutionary student, his conversations with Om puri explores his skills in dialogue delivery with proper diction and voice modulation. Esha is merely wasted but she is sweet in that short role.

Vivek is vivek himself and evokes laughter with in usual Mani?s style of oneliners and delivers a very natural performance and Kareena is so natural than ever before and surprise us with her subtle performance. And Om puri in a usual villainous role does a good job. And all other supporting cast is natural under the control of the perfectionist ?Maniratnam?.

Climax of the Review ? Views about Climax of the movie

I think one cannot think of a better fitting climax for this movie. A hard-hitting message that ?Educated Youngsters should enter into politics? is well packed and what more you expect. Do you want showing all those campaign scenes and all those post election formalities in the movie. It is unnecessary to show all those things and it is something great to see youth entering the Assembly with Jeans and T-shirts amidst dhothi wallas politicians. India will definitely shine if Mani?s dream comes true and Indian cinema will definitely shine if this film makes big in box office.
